About the Item
Sandra Cohen’s “Mr. Jones” is a 24 x 24 x .75 inch acrylic painting on canvas. A vintage car is driving through a landscape loosely painted in grey and luminescent tones of blue, with a geometric pattern overlaid. The background and overlaid pattern combine to form an enormous skull overlooking the scene, as bright yellow dividing lines delineate a road where the car and driver are breaking through this abstract barrier. This is a rumination on the death of David Bowie (Jones).
Sandra Cohen’s dreamlike painting and mixed media work explores the paradoxical nature she finds everywhere. Cohen layers a constantly shifting ground of memory with snippets of lyrics, invasive ‘earworms’, and the human tendency to create order from chaos. Music is intimately entwined with memory for Cohen, who has been a performing musician and songwriter. She also has a deep interest in science, especially the concepts of modern physics. Using techniques that vary from wet to dry and tight to loose, and processes that may weave between digital and tactile, the act of creating the work also reflects what she hopes emerges: glimpses of a true/false spectrum wavering into being as lustrous, rhythmic, and often darkly humorous hybrids.
