About the Item

'Nine Settlement Valley' Original artwork, unframed ____________________ We are all the stories of the journeys that have come before: of the migrations and movements, of the free and the caged. The names we bestow upon ourselves and the things around us are the narratives of the paths travelled. This unique photogram is of a bamboo named for its place of birth -Jiuzhaigou (Nine Settlement Valley) - where for six centuries, a group of Tibetan pilgrims who had sought refuge, were protected, hidden and freed by the vast, veiling mountain range. 'Nine Settlement Valley' speaks of the forces of freedom and desire, of desperation driving hope, of bravery and fear. It captures an essence of the ephemeral and the enduring: this fleeting moment is wrapped in ancient symbolism and ceaseless struggles. There are shadows, lurking behind glimmers of light, and shafts of light breaking through the darkness. This artwork is from an evolving body of work titled 'Elemental' in which Sophia employs her unique style of working using the four elements of nature. The physical plein air process of creating this painting captures the tangible moment when the primary forces of sunlight and the winds of time are frozen into being: A painting scratched and scarred by the caress of stems and leaves in the breeze; then to be washed, bathed, and revealed: tactile memories, intrinsically embedded. 'It is a balancing act of control and freedom; of discipline and guidance, whilst simultaneously relinquishing all authority and throwing the odds to the winds, to chance encounters and the unexpected'. Unique cyanotype photogram on watercolour paper Signed in pencil to the lower right corner. 58.5 x 41.5cm / 23 x 16.3 inches ________________________________ About The Artist Sophia Milligan is a contemporary multidisciplinary artist acknowledging that in all things there is balance: exploring discourses on permanence & evanescence; the eternal, cyclical absolutes of birth & death; motherhood & childhood; and ancient immutable connections. With resonating ripples of intuition and instinct Sophia illuminates the presence of the ordinary, creating moments of sublime present. 'Born among the wild cliffs and tempestuous seas of west Cornwall, I grew with the intimate details in the twisting lanes and the intense changing light throughout the turbulent seasons. I formed a primordial connection with a deep instinctual sense of being part of the natural narrative, and wherever in the world I may be, this connectivity underpins my practice. Like the wind sculpted hawthorns and sensual coves of weather worn granite, I have been shaped by the powerful energy entwined in this ancient raw environment.’ ‘We are the stories of the journeys that came before. I weave into my work the tales of transitory circumstance; of struggle and survival; of forms and textures holding records of evolutionary millennia. I paint, I draw: with marks, mixtures, photography, words; the raw earth; the restless oceans; the whispered breeze. I work with time, and the immeasurable spaces of experience within, giving subtleties of existence a pause for contemplation. There is beauty in such poignant breaths. All moments are significant, every pebble of now forms the vast mountain of yesterday, and the great realm of tomorrow's possibilities'. Sophia has a 1st class honours Bachelor of Arts Degree in Visual Arts and World History, and a Masters Degree in Contemporary Visual Arts. Her work is held in international private collections, and exhibitions of her interactive, immersive installation, photography and mixed media works include 'Tabula Rasa', London; 'Superlative', Plymouth; 'Transition', Newlyn; The Eden Project, Cornwall; The European Parliament, Brussels; Kew Gardens, London; and 'The Cameraless Film Festival', Chicago. _________________________ Contemporary . Summer Poppies (30 x 22.5" cyanotype painting)
Located in Oakland, CA
This unique multistep technique is a combination of a painting and a photograph or monotype. Cyanotypes are a kind of alternative photographic process from the 1800s. The chemicals are different from those used in black and white photography. The light-sensitive chemicals can be used to print blue and white photographs from a large negative or a person can capture the silhouette of solid objects rather like an x-ray in blue and white. In her Delft Garden series, artist Christine So first drew the outline of a plant in pencil and then painted it in a dark room —not paint– but with the cyanotype light-sensitive emulsion. When the painting had dried, she arranged plants on top of the painted silhouette in a pattern that would leave gaps like lace, carefully moved the entire bundle outside while still covered and then exposed the pattern multiple times at different angles to the sun, to achieve various shades of blue and white. The heavy cotton watercolor paper then needed to be thoroughly rinsed in order to stop the darkening process. The silhouette here is of the Giant California Tree...
