About the Item

Alice B. Doughten (1880-1969). Still Life with Roses, ca. 1930. Oil on masonite panel, 12 x 16 inches. Measures 18 x 22 inches framed. Signed lower right. Original label affixed on verso with Moorestown NJ identified as artist's address. Born in Camden, New Jersey, Alice Doughten became noted for her still life and landscape paintings with figures, usually watercolors and sometimes abstract in style. She studied art at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts with Henry McCarter, Earl Horter, Ralph Pearson, Fred Wagner and Hugh Breckenridge. Exhibition venues included the Art Institute of Chicago where in 1915 she entered the Annual Exhibition of Watercolors with two paintings: "Breton Peasant" and "Gathering Seaweed, Brittany". These paintings reflected her travels to France. According to the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts School Circular, 1910, p. 64, Miss Doughten received the Cresson Travelling Scholarship in 1910. To quote from the Circular (p.43): "The trip abroad is limited to the summer vacation, a period of four months, from June to September inclusive, so that students can return to the Academy for study during the ensuing school year." For several years she taught design at the Philadelphia School of Occupational Therapy, and she was a member of the Plastic Club of Philadelphia. In 1915, she was listed as a resident of Camden, New Jersey, but few details are known about her life.
