Since August 2018 Sietse W. Jonker belongs to the group of artists that we permanently represent in our stock-exposition. In mid-2019, this still-life artist will take part in a group exhibition devoted to still life in painting. His work can be seen all year round and for sale through our gallery. To get to know him, we visited the artist in his studio in Leeuwarden. a centrally located donkey and a window on the Noorderlicht dominate the space together with the still life that he is currently working on. According to the artist, a still life should not be 'made to look', in the final painting it should ultimately be an ordered harmony. The artist himself: That is not always easy and sometimes I am busy with all kinds of objects here in the house. Every now and then something comes up or something is taken away again until I am satisfied. Usually I have a vague idea of what I want, but to give that 'vague idea' a concrete form is quite difficult. When you look at this painting "Sprats" by Dutch artist Sasja Wagenaar (1959) from a distance you see a perfectly painted image, but up close a flowing movement of the paint streaks is visible.
Sasja Wagenaar has a unique way of applying shadow and light effects in her paintings. The strong reflection on the dark background is a reference to the camera obscura. This dark room was used since the 16th century by Old Masters (such as Vermeer, as is presumed) to create a detailed reflection of an object.
Sasja Wagenaar is inspired by our classic masters from the seventeenth century, a flourishing period in Dutch painting. The century in which new continents, markets and arts were discovered. At that time in the Netherlands it was a real fad to collect chinoiserie. Originally porcelain, but also Dutch pottery, also known as Delft blue, inspired by Chinese and especially by Japanese bowls and vases.
To quote Sasja Wagenaar: ‘Every platter, every bowl is already so much in itself. They were made with great care through hundreds of hands before they ended up here. Their character must be respected in composing the story that forms a still life. They are as alive as the blossom branches and I try to let them speak together. Slowly the image is created’.
Although rooted in the 17th century Dutch tradition, her work shows her very own signature and is contemporary. As a true Modern Dutch Master...

After earning her degree from Pennsylvania State University, Kelly moved to southern California where she began a career as a fashion model. Her agency soon sent her abroad to Paris and Tokyo, where she spent the next several years modeling. When she wasn’t walking the runway, she spent endless hours in the great museums of the world, closely observing and studying the works of the Old Masters. “My time abroad, particularly in Paris, opened my eyes to the vast beauty and power of a great painting. After that I knew I wanted to dedicate my life to the pursuit of Fine Art” said Birkenruth. After returning to the States, Kelly studied at Otis College of Art in Los Angeles, CA. She then continued her studies through workshops and private study with renowned artists such as Daniel Sprick, Steven Assael and Jesus Emmanuel Villarreal.
