About the Item

Carstian Luyckx (c. 1627-1675) Still life with parrot, monkey and character behind window Oil on canvas, 121 x 92 cm Framed, 145 x 115 cm This magnificent canvas represents a Flemish-made still life to be configured within the 17th century and, in particular, within the subgenre, first developed in Antwerp but later expanded to all of the Low Countries, of the Pronkstilleven. The latter consists of a sumptuous type of still life, rich in objects, animals, human, plant, and floral figures that give the work a greater level of complexity and variety both in tone and in the subjects themselves; moreover, these works were often intended to have a moralizing meaning by showing the hollowness and impermanence of material things precisely through their superabundant and opulent depiction. Leaving aside the contrast between the underlying message and the figures, the latter cannot fail to be admired for their lenticular rendering in every detail, the luminous riot of coloration, and the skillful use of soft and harmonious chiaroscuro between the light and shadow parts. Focusing on the city of origin of the Pronkstilleven, namely Antwerp, we identify the name of the author of this work: Carstian Luyckx , also known as the Monogrammist KL, and famous for his still lifes, which he developed into other subgenres such as vanitas, hunts or garland paintings. Coincidences with the production of this artist, who was in the workshop of a specialist in the genre such as Philips de Marlier and also studied under Frans Franken III, are found in several works such as the two still lifes, one in Ohio the other in Montréal, where we find the lobster, the lemon peel in the glass, the purple curtain and the golden cup decorated with set stones. Continuing on, one finds even more similar ones: in one from the same vertical cut and with the addition of the dog, part of a private collection, both the parrot and a human figure at the window have appeared following major cleaning, while in another, also in a private collection, we find all the elements, including the monkey on the table, except for the man looking out of the window grates in the background. As if these tangencies of subject and style were already not enough, a canvas by our artist that identifies in every way with ours had already appeared on the market in the past, suggesting that it is perhaps even the same, and confirming with extreme certainty the canvas' authorship. This should not suggest an artist settled on a few repeated compositions; on the contrary, he tried his hand, as mentioned above, at more than one type of still life, achieving enormous success both at home and in France, where he worked for several years. Some of the most famous works in different genres include: the Ricordo mori from a private collection, close to the themes of vanitas, or the Poultry attacked by a fox, regarding scenes with live animals and cacia, and finally the Cartouche with flowers, to be framed in the paintings of garlands or with floral subjects as protagonists.

UNTITLED CONSTRUCT 4 - Framed Red, Yellow, & Teal Abstract Oil Painting
By Donald Keefe
Located in Signal Mountain, TN
"I don’t do enough red paintings. I like red, but somehow it doesn’t end up in my work all that often, or it ends up pretty muted and earthy by the end. When I was lighting the sculpture upon which this painting is based, I knew I wanted to do something with the red lights I had. As with previous work, this painting explores entanglement as both a compositional structure and as an artistic idea. The representational part of the painting is pushed as close to a photographic rendering as I could at the time. Meanwhile, I’ve contrasted that with flat graphic elements. I also wanted to do something interesting with the cast shadow of the form: whereas in some previous works in the series the main form either had a traditional cast shadow grounding the it to the illusion of a ground plane, or no cast shadow which left it floating within the shallow depth of the image, in Untitled Construct 5 I wanted to do something more specific with the cast shadow. The idea came to me to invert it to be pure white. Technically this was a bit of a challenge because the whitest oil paints take months to dry – so this work had quite a bit of ‘sit and wait time’ between layers. Personally, I enjoy the composition of this painting because the red attracts the eye towards the bottom left of the painting, but the contrasting movements in black, gray and white pull the eye up and over...
