About the Item

CHARLES LEVIER – "LE VASE BLEU" Oil on Canvas ⚜ Signed Lower Right & Verso ⚜ Professionally Framed A RARE MIDCENTURY STILL LIFE WITH HISTORICAL DEPTH A striking floral still life by Charles Levier, Le Vase Bleu stands out with its high-contrast palette and unusually dark background — a rare visual approach within Levier’s body of floral works. The cool blues and whites of the bouquet emerge from a luminous powder blue vase, anchored by a textured tabletop and surrounded by a field of deep black, lending the composition drama and clarity. On the verso, a handwritten title — Saltimbanques et la femme (“Acrobats and Woman”) — suggests that this canvas was repurposed from an earlier work, a practice not uncommon for Levier and other modern painters. Though not conceptually linked to the current still life, this detail adds historical dimension and insight into the artist’s studio process. Further elevating its significance is the provenance, supported by two gallery labels affixed to the reverse: one from Van Diemen-Lilienfeld Galleries, New York (circa 1960), and another from Carroll-Condit Galleries, White Plains (circa 1995). The painting is presented in a beautiful custom wood frame, conservation quality and ready to display. WHY COLLECT THIS WORK? ✓ Unique Canvas History – Earlier title visible on verso suggests the canvas was repurposed ✓ Distinctive Composition – Rich contrast and an unusually dark background for Levier ✓ Double Signature – Signed both lower right and on the verso ✓ Documented Provenance – Gallery labels from two established 20th-century galleries ✓ Professionally Framed – Custom wood frame, conservation quality ARTWORK DETAILS: ▸ Title: Le Vase Bleu ▸ Artist: Charles Levier (1920-2003) ▸ Medium: Oil on Canvas ▸ Year of Creation: Circa 1960 ▸ Signature: Hand-Signed Lower Right and on Verso ▸ Provenance: Van Diemen-Lilienfeld Galleries, New York, Circa 1960; Carroll-Condit Galleries, White Plains, Circa 1995 ▸ Country of Origin: France ▸ Dimensions: — ◼︎ Image Area: 39 x 28 inches — ◻︎ Framed Size: 44.125 x 33.25 x 2.5 inches ▸ Condition: Excellent – Well-preserved with vibrant colors and stunning texture ▸ Framing: Professionally Conservation Framed – Ready to display INCLUDED DOCUMENTATION: ✓ Gallery labels affixed to verso: (1) Van Diemen-Lilienfeld Galleries, New York; and (2) Carroll-Condit Galleries, White Plains (see images) ✓ Certificate of Authenticity ✓ Artist Biography Info THE ARTIST: Born in Corsica in 1920, Charles Levier was an internationally acclaimed modern artist known for his abstracted still lifes, cityscapes, harbor scenes, and figurative compositions. His early education at L'École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs introduced him to the artistic principles of André Lhote and Georges Rouault. However, his artistic journey was briefly interrupted when he served in World War II, acting as a liaison between the French Army and the U.S. Office of Strategic Services. After the war, Levier’s career flourished on both sides of the Atlantic. His first U.S. exhibition was in Los Angeles in 1950, leading to a string of successful solo shows, including those at the prestigious Galerie du Colisée in Paris and the Lilienfeld Gallery in New York. Levier’s works gained a cult following among Hollywood elites, with collectors including Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Jackie Kennedy, Baron Edmond de Rothschild, Prince and Princess Pontiatowski, and Peter Lawford. Levier’s style is deeply rooted in Cubism, a movement pioneered by Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881-1973) and Georges Braque (French, 1882-1963). He adopted bold black outlines and progressive layers of blues, greens, and reds, creating compositions that resonate with both French modernism and mid-century aesthetics. His work remains in major museum collections worldwide, including the National Museum of Modern Art (Paris), the Menton Museum of Art, the Atlanta Museum, the Seattle Museum, and the San Diego Museum. Levier passed away in 2003, leaving behind a legacy of timeless works that continue to captivate art collectors around the world.
