Edward Ladell
19th Century English still life of Strawberries, Melon, Peaches, gooseberries

1862

About the Item

Edward Ladell (English, 1821–1886) Still Life of Fruit, oil on panel, signed and dated 1862 This richly detailed still life by Edward Ladell is a superb early example of the artist’s distinctive and highly recognisable style, painted in 1862 at the height of the Victorian fascination with realism and domestic abundance. Executed in oil on panel, the work features an array of ripe summer fruits—peaches, greengages, strawberries and a deeply textured melon—arranged with studied elegance upon a rustic ledge. A woven basket, partially unravelling in the background, introduces texture and shadow, while a glimpse of an idealised landscape is visible through the opening beyond, linking the stillness of the arrangement to the wider natural world. Ladell was a self-taught painter from Colchester, Essex, and became one of the most admired English still life artists of the 19th century. Inspired by Dutch Golden Age painting, his work is marked by dramatic contrasts of light and shade, lustrous surfaces, and a meticulous attention to reflective detail. Each element in this composition is chosen not only for its visual appeal, but also for the harmony it lends to the overall arrangement. The inclusion of a folded vine leaf beneath the strawberries is characteristic of Ladell’s signature touch, anchoring the fruit in space and drawing the viewer’s eye forward. His use of chiaroscuro—light falling softly across the varied surfaces—lends the composition both drama and refinement. Painted just a year after his marriage and early in his exhibiting career at the Royal Academy, this work reflects Ladell’s growing command of his medium. It stands as a finely preserved example of mid-Victorian still life painting—intimate, opulent, and composed with deliberate and enduring charm. The frame is a Vintage hand made English frame.

19th century English oil of still life of fruit, German Stein with silver lid
By CHARLES THOMAS BALE
Located in Woodbury, CT
Outstanding English 19th century still life of fruit, a German Stein with silver top in an interior. Charles Thomas Bale was born in Soho, London in 1849, the son of Thomas Bale, a basket maker. His older brother Thomas Charles Bale (1831-1899) was an artist and picture restorer. He lived with his family in St James, Westminster and although little is known about his education, he would have undoubtedly received encouragement and drawing tuition from his brother. Bale started exhibiting in 1866 at the Institute of British Artists, Suffolk Street. He also exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1872, the same year he married Caroline Leathem. Together, they spent their married life in St Pancras. He specialized in still life paintings predominantly of fruit, but he frequently incorporated baskets, a homage to his family’s profession, as well as pottery, glass, and game. Bale’s work was influenced by the English still-life artists George Lance and William Duffield...
