About the Item
This still life was painted from direct observation, with the artist working in natural light over several sessions. The composition is intentionally pared down: three loosely opened white flowers in a tall ceramic vase, and two ripe yellow pears resting on a shallow plate. What may seem like a simple setup was chosen for the way it allowed light and color to speak quietly but clearly.
The artist was drawn to the contrast between the pale, delicate petals and the solid, golden forms of the fruit — both catching and reflecting the soft daylight in different ways. The palette is cool and restrained, dominated by muted greys, blues, and soft ochres. This restraint helps to focus attention on the forms and the spaces between them.
Rather than dramatize the objects, the artist sought to capture their quiet presence — the stillness of a moment when nothing moves, and everything simply is. The painting invites the viewer to notice subtle transitions: a shift in temperature, a soft shadow, a glint of reflected color on a porcelain edge.
Elena Bulatova is a Munich-based painter working primarily in oil, often in the alla prima technique. Born in Moscow, Russia in 1981, she received early training in a children’s art school, laying the foundation for a lifelong dedication to painting.
Her artistic practice is rooted in academic traditions, yet she continuously seeks freedom and individuality in her work. Bulatova often paints en plein air, working directly from life to capture the essence of a moment with immediacy and sensitivity. She is especially drawn to subjects found in her everyday surroundings—landscapes, people, portraits, and the human figure—exploring the natural beauty and quiet poetry of the visible world.
Over the past twenty years, Bulatova has developed her skills through a combination of self-directed study and mentorship with experienced artists. She has studied in diverse settings, including traditional icon painting in Moscow and the AktHof in Munich. Currently, she is enrolled as an external student at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, deepening her engagement with classical technique and contemporary practice.

Elena Bulatova (1981) is a Russian artist living in Munich, Germany. After fifteen years of painting dedicatedly and hermetically - alternately self-taught and under the guidance of older painters - Elena Bulatova wishes to share her practice with the world. In her constant self-study, Bulatova has sought instruction from a variety of sources - from the Eastern Orthodox icon painting school in Moscow to the Academy of Fine arts in Munich. She is currently enrolled externally at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich to better understand the modern side of the art world. She believes that the true value of art lies in the meditative process that goes into creating such a work and in the years of mastery that a person can undertake and overcome to become a master in any field. The themes of her work are: nature, animals and authentic human beauty.
