Close to the Expressionists, in the tradition of painters Kees Van Dongen and Georges Rouault, he is the painter of nightlife, bars, nightclubs, and jazz clubs in Marseille, then in Paris starting in the 1920s. This canvas, which he made following abstract expressionism, and which belongs to his Parisian period as evidenced by the address of his atelier in Montmartre written on the frame, is a real exception: an emerald green vase on a brown background from which practically explodes a lush bouquet of flowers, in bright shades of white, red and blue, and yellow, the colors expertly spread by palette knife, dense, capable of giving a strong image, striking the viewer, just like his cabaret ladies.
Biography:
Lucien Roudier, born January 2, 1894 in Marseille, died March 16, 1940 in Paris, was a French artist, painter and illustrator who signed his works with the pseudonym Eller (from his initials L.R.). Lucien Eller was the painter of nightlife, bars, night clubs, and jazz clubs in Marseille, then in Paris starting in the 1920s.
A graduate of the Société des Beaux-Arts in Marseille where he was born, he arrived in Paris after World War I where he witnessed the Parisian nights of the Roaring Twenties. An illustrator, he worked in Marseille on the women's pages of Le Soleil de Marseille and in Paris on the magazines Le Rire and Fantasio. As a painter he exhibited in Paris at the Devambez Gallery and the Salons des Indépendants.
A former soldier, he created the Salon of Veteran Artists, Painters and Sculptors, which was inaugurated each year on the banks of the Seine by the President of the Republic. Decorated with the Legion of Honor in 1938, he was also one of the founders of the Club des Marseillais de Paris. He was classified as a Freemason by the Vichy government.
He died prematurely in March 1940 in his workshop at 5 rue Clauzel in lower Montmartre.

"In the past I worked on light and shadow effects. Now I paint exclusively for unusual effects and color harmonies." It is with these words that Martin Borgord, a Norwegian-born but naturalized American painter, interviewed by a journalist from the Hartford Courant, explains our painting.Straddling the line between Impressionism and Expressionism, the elegant lady loses the sharpness of detail, blending with light and color in quick, dense brushstrokes.
Excellent state of preservation.Presented in antique carved and silvered wooden frame. It has a regular Fine Arts export certificate.

By Mortimer Borne
Located in Surfside, FL
Floral painting. Flowers in a vase. Mortimer Borne, Printmaker, painter, sculptor, and educator was born in Rypin, Poland in 1902 and emigrated to the US in 1916. He studied at the National Academy of Design, The Art Students League, The Beaux-Arts Institute of Design, and with Charles Webster Hawthorne, founder of the Cape Cod School of Art in Provincetown. Painted in a thick impasto style similar in technique to Samuel Rothbort and David Burliuk.
Borne himself taught at The New School for Social Research in New York City from 1945-1967. From the 1920s through the 40s he was a prolific producer of New York City cityscapes and genre scenes. In later decades, he adopted a more modernist style apparently influenced by Picasso, producing color drypoints of abstracted figures. His works were widely exhibited in museums in the U.S. and abroad from 1931 and later, including the Art Institute of Chicago, the American Institute of Graphic Arts, Museum of Modern Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Corcoran Gallery of Art, New York Public Library, Carnegie Institute, and Royal Society of Painters, Etchers and Engravers in London. He taught at The New School for Social Research in New York City from 1945-1967, and at the Tappan...
