Description:
Titled “Vutien à St Malo” and dated 1999, this evocative French coastal oil painting by Fanch Lel captures a quiet moment in the harbour of Saint-Malo, a historic walled port city on the Brittany coast. Rendered in broad, expressive brushstrokes on unprimed board, Lel’s technique blends abstraction and impressionism to create a scene that feels both spontaneous and timeless.
In the foreground, three traditional fishing boats—referred to here as “vutien,” possibly a local or affectionate term—sit calmly in the tide, their hulls reflected in the pale green water. The reflections shimmer gently across the surface, broken only by painterly marks that suggest the ripple of a breeze or movement of the tide. Behind the boats, an abstracted shoreline composed of verticals and blocks of muted blue and ochre suggests buildings, masts, and perhaps the ramparts for which Saint-Malo is renowned.
Saint-Malo, once a fortress and pirate stronghold, is now known for its dramatic tides, old granite architecture, and distinctive maritime charm. Fanch Lel captures its unique atmosphere not through literal detail, but through mood and motion—the kind of scene seen briefly in passing, or half-remembered from a visit long ago.
The unpainted areas of the board are used to great effect, adding warmth and texture, while the soft pastel palette brings calm and a slight haze to the work. Perfect for lovers of nautical art, French impressionist painting, or those drawn to the historic coastlines of Brittany.

Fanch Lel
Fanch Lel’s paintings, primarily executed in oil and gouache, evoke the serenity and charm of the French countryside, with a particular emphasis on the region's coastal and rural beauty. His works often highlight iconic landmarks such as Mont Saint-Michel and capture the essence of Breton culture with his portrayals of the region’s people and customs. Lel's self-taught, plein air approach allows for dynamic compositions that reflect the atmospheric light and textures of the region, giving his pieces a timeless appeal. His choice of soft, muted colors and rich textures brings a sense of nostalgia and quietude to each painting, making them a perfect addition to collections that appreciate mid-century French art.
