Description:
Titled “Vutien à St Malo” and dated 1999, this evocative French coastal oil painting by Fanch Lel captures a quiet moment in the harbour of Saint-Malo, a historic walled port city on the Brittany coast. Rendered in broad, expressive brushstrokes on unprimed board, Lel’s technique blends abstraction and impressionism to create a scene that feels both spontaneous and timeless.
In the foreground, three traditional fishing boats—referred to here as “vutien,” possibly a local or affectionate term—sit calmly in the tide, their hulls reflected in the pale green water. The reflections shimmer gently across the surface, broken only by painterly marks that suggest the ripple of a breeze or movement of the tide. Behind the boats, an abstracted shoreline composed of verticals and blocks of muted blue and ochre suggests buildings, masts, and perhaps the ramparts for which Saint-Malo is renowned.
