He was known for his landscapes, seascapes, street scenes, and desert scenes of California. He attended the Art Institute of Chicago and the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts. Gavencky often traveled to California during the 1930s. He eventually settled in Ramona, California and remained there until his death in 1966.
