About the Item

This painting, painted by Franz Dvorak in 1923 in anticipation of the centenary celebration in 1924 of the birth of Bedrich Smetana (1824-1884), depicts the great Czech composer and founder of the Czech national school of music with his friends in 1865. Smetana at this time was entering the most crucial and fertile period of his professional life. His first opera “The Brandenburgers in Bohemia,” composed between February of 1862 and April of 1863, was about to premier in January of 1866. He currently was composing, between July of 1863 and the spring of 1865, his greatest work, the ever popular “The Bartered Bride.” The opera, first premiered in May of 1866, was revised and performed in its final form in September of 1870. Smetana already had by 1865 composed the overture, the one part of the opera that frequently is performed today. This painting no doubt shows an exciting afternoon, for Smetana is surrounded by the many important people in his life. Smetana was, in addition to being a superb composer and conductor, a prodigy as a pianist. He composed music, played the piano and taught music during his early years, but feeling there could be no future for him in Prague he moved in 1856 to Göteborg in Sweden. His life took a dramatic turn in Sweden. His wife Kateina died in 1859 (of their four daughters only Zofie survived). Smetana married Bettina Ferdinandová (his brother’s sister-in-law) a year later. Believing the cultural and political situation in Prague had changed for the better, he resettled there in May of 1861. Almost immediately the strongly individualistic Smetana began cultivating the leading figures in Czech literary and musical life, and he invited them regularly to his flat near the town square (Tyn Church or the Church of Saint Mary of Tyn, a famous landmark on the square, can be seen through the window behind Smetana) on Sunday afternoons. This was done in an attempt to establish himself as one of their circle and to gain their support in his fight to champion Czech music and musicians.

Mark Bowers- Artist Statement With the depiction of landscape playing such a central role in the history of North American art, it seemed to offer many of the critical possibilities I was looking for, and it felt more and more like something I have always known. Something I could easily apply, stage, and manipulate as a diary. My work consists of small-scale highly detailed landscape paintings. They are inspired by the comfort, trepidation, and beauty found in the mundane Chicago Suburbs. I combine nature, decorative house wares, municipal structures, and personal artifacts to hint at current life and future implications in the orchestration of these elements. Each work in the series is a portrait of a search for markers on a journey, an attempt to learn from what is palpable and to appreciate the intangible. The paintings are meant to suggest the truth in the un-idealized moment--the actual truth only exists off the edges of my canvas, off stage, and in the experience of the viewer.
