About the Item
Early Twentieth Century Newlyn School Painting of Still Life with Lobster and Wine Glass set on a Table, Large Framed Oil Painting.
This painting by Wolseley is a marvellous study in light and colour by this giant of the Newlyn School. The brush strokes are broad and confident and the colours are wonderfully fresh and vibrant. It is vivacious and obviously painted "en plein air", this still life to my mind is astonishing, every bit as good as the Scottish Colourists, Peploe, Campbell Boileau or Fergusson, love it!
It is framed in it's original gold leaf frame which compliments it exactly.
Garnet Wolseley may not be as readily known as say Laura Knight or Alfred Munnings but he is certainly revered similarly and works by him are actually most infrequent to the market.
Garnet Ruskin Wolseley began his formal training at Hubert von Herkomer's art school in Bushey, from where he won a scholarship to the Slade. There, under the tutelage of Henry Tonks and Fred Brown he was awarded a gold medal. In 1908, at the age of 24, he moved to Newlyn. The Cornish fishing village was already firmly established as an artist's colony, and he formed a close friendship with Laura and Harold Knight, who had arrived from the Yorkshire fishing village of Staithes the previous year. Their influence can be seen in his light filled and impressionistic works, which are predominantly a celebration of youthful and carefree Cornish life. Forever associated with Laura and Harold Knight and Alfred Munnings, his image can be seen on the famous portrait by Harold Knight “Afternoon Tea”, in which Wolseley is represented as the butler!
He painted mostly landscapes around Newlyn and the Lamorna Valley exhibiting regularly at the Royal Academy. Popular and active within the community of artists he served on the main committee of the Newlyn Society of Artists to 1913. During the Great War he served in the navy after which he moved to Chelsea, London, becoming a successful portrait painter. Elected a member of the Royal West of England Academy in 1925 he continued to exhibit at the RA and elsewhere. Garnet Ruskin Wolseley's works are held in public collections including Penlee House Gallery & Museum and the Bushey Museum and Art Gallery.
