About the Item
Georges Jessen (La Louvière, 1892 - Uccle, 1963), Still life with vase of lilies, large oil on canvas signed.
This bright painting depicts a bouquet of fresh lilies in a blue opaline vase, next to which, in a smaller vase, dandelions stand out and, on the table, a bouquet of daisies. Bright colors stand out against a dark background. The large size and skillful use of color make it an extremely decorative painting.
Georges Jessen was a Belgian painter trained at the Mons (1915-1916) and Brussels Academies under Jean Delville and Constant Montald. He was a professor at the Académie de Saint-Gilles from 1925 and served as its director from 1950 to 1960. He favored landscapes, flowers, portraits and nudes. His painting initially remained faithful to the Flemings, with an accentuated attention to detail and a scrupulous study of light and color; then, as the 20th century progressed, he indulged in more modern techniques, both in paintings of flowers and seascapes, which he loved. Our painting belongs to Jessen's early period.
In excellent condition, the painting has its original gilded wooden frame.
