Harrington Mann Portrait of a Woman in an Interior 1864-1937 Oil on canvas, signed lower left Image size: 21 1/4 x 30 inches (53.5 x 76 cm) Framed Exhibited: Glasgow Institute of Fine Art 1890 no. 760 as 'A Portrait’ Harrington Mann As the son of a painter John Mann, and the novelist Mary Newton Harrington, Harrington Mann, born in Glasgow, grew up in an environment that cultivated creativity. Later becoming part of the influential modern artist and designer group in Glasgow; The Glasgow Boys. Specialising in portraiture and the decorative arts Mann began his studies at The Glasgow School of Art. Later enrolling at the Slade School of Fine Art, where he was tutored by French artist Alphonse Legros. Acquiring the skills and style of French art, Mann moved to Paris to study at the Académie Julian. In his work the influence of contemporary French art is seen through his pairing of soft colours with loose brushstrokes, reminiscent of the pioneering works of his Impressionist predecessors. In the 1880’s, Mann started to develop a name for himself through his compositions of fishing communities in Yorkshire. During this period his work, predominantly landscapes, utilised vibrant hues to accentuate and capture the small fishing port’s abundance of light. Mann’s confidence with strong uses of colour from his early works in the fishing village later contributed to his decorative work for the Scottish firm of J. and W, Guthrie. Commissioned to capture his confident use of strong colour, Mann was challenged with the design of stained glass windows for St Bartholomew’s Church in what is now Cumbria. In 1900, Mann expanded his practice, moving to London and then opening up a studio in New York where his paintings gained popularity. While in London, Mann found success in his society portraits through their depictions of domestic life, especially that of children and members of the British royal family. Despite his works' traditional compositions, Mann experimented with the stylistic influence of John Singer Sargent and James McNeill Whistler through his use of colour, form and unrefined brushstrokes. Mann’s influence and importance in the art of the late 19th and early 20th century is most notable in his work as one of the founding member of the National Portrait Society in 1911. Greens, Blues, and Yellow/Browns prevail in this still life of a table with fruits, cake, and a candle. Nude is painted verso on stretched canvas under frame. Frame 24.5 x 28.875 x 1.625, Canvas 21.875 x 23.875 A student of Paul Albert Laurens (1870-1934) at the Académie Julian, his figurative work, very colorful, with powerful and stripped down forms, made him one of the last representatives of Fauvism and the eldest of the group of Painters of Poetic Reality. He belongs to the School of Paris. In 1943, Jacques de Laprade dedicated a book to Roger Limouse in the collection "The Masters of Tomorrow" directed by Francis Carco. He writes, "One of the characteristics of this personality is strength. There is nothing in Limouse that lacks relief. This small and extremely vigorous man seduces by his direct and dru language, by his deep conviction, by the picturesque of his stories, by his very life which testifies to his energy. In 1948, Roger Limouse was appointed professor at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris (Professor at the School of Fine Arts). He held this position until 1964.
