About the Item

PASSAGE is a multilayered composition created with paper and tyvek cut-outs painted with oil, acrylic, and gouache, sealed with polyester mesh. The white, reverse silhouettes are Red Columbines (Aguilegia), perennial plants typical for the meadows and woodlands of the Northern Hemisphere. Like most plants used in the series, Columbines are native to the United States and have been collected from Hartman’s garden. The painting was created right after the artist’s visit to Madrid’s del Prado, which reflects itself in the detail and amber palettes in the language of Dutch still life paintings. Here, the reds and yellows are overlaid on a dark background, becoming a source of warm darkness. The white silhouettes of Columbines resemble ghosts, lit up by an intense burst of light. As suggested by the title, the plants are passing into another stage of their lifecycle, leaving the viewer wondering – are the flowers fading surrounded by a gentle light of summer, or in a scorch of a ravaging wildfire.

CHROMASEEDS - Framed Mixed Media Painting of 3 Gaillardia w/ Blooms Falling
By Heather Hartman
Located in Signal Mountain, TN
CHROMASEEDS is a multilayered composition created with paper and tyvek cut-outs painted with oil, acrylic, and gouache, sealed with polyester mesh layers. The plants represented in the piece are Gaillardia flowers, commonly known as blanket flowers, native to North America and often bred for their decorative, ornamental shape. In her creative process, Hartman anthropomorphizes the flowers, paying attention to their dance-like growth movement. Here, their shadows dance in the prismatic light of the rainbow, while the wind catches their seeds, cultivating the garden. The vibrant, rainbow light was achieved by painting a prismatic shape on tyvec and black paper, creating a reverse silhouette...

The Earth’s diverse surface is fascinating. The vegetative environments invite viewers to visit a place. Local light and atmosphere affect the plant life that thrives, the colors we see and experience of mood and energy. These botanical paintings explore memory and landscape with complex spatial environments that hover between painterly realism and abstract passages. Throughout the long tradition of landscape painting, there exists a connection between the artist and the natural world. A painter can evoke this relationship through the use of color, value and line whether the painting is representational or abstracted. These elements combine and intertwine to create rhythms of perspective and dimension, illuminating this personal vision on canvas. Yupo paper is waterproof, and stands up to the rigors of the elements and demanding environments. Ultra-smooth and bright white, it's a paper alternative that stands out. Bio Julie...
