About the Item

Heather Neill's (US based) "French Breakfast Radish" is an original, handmade oil painting that depicts a radish rising from an open tea kettle with a French flag in the background. Artist Autobiography: Born in Honolulu, Hawaii, 1958, my family moved every two years thereafter from California to NJ to PA, and back and forth in-between coming to rest for a while in Swarthmore, PA for the high school years then off to Connecticut College as an art major. The only formal training I have is from my college years, when I focused mainly on black and white, finding refuge in the pencil and printmaking process. I went to Boston after college. Worked in the Harvard Sq. Coop as a picture framer and ended up managing their custom-framing department for most of the 80’s. I left there to move to Muddy Creek Forks, a tiny self-contained village in a remote holler of Pennsylvania where I lived in the abandoned general store (post office, train station and hotel all in one building) and spent the next 5 or 6 years as a traditional chairmaker. Sitting on my shaving horse with my drawknife (using only hand tools) I made Shaker style ladder-back chairs and made the rounds of juried craft shows and museums. I can’t count the number of odd jobs that have put bread on the table since then, but they include farm hand, carpenter, bookbinder, vest maker, stripper at a three woman printing company and picture framer off and on for 25 years. My easel has been set up in every one of the 26 places I have lived so far. As of 2001 I now paint full time and divide my time between my log cabin and adjoining studio along the Little Conewago Creek in Manchester, PA and the open studio of Martha’s Vineyard, MA. By the time I decided to give painting my full time efforts I was well into my early forties. My partner of twenty years is a hospice nurse and living with her has taught me that life is short and far too precious to be doing something less than meaningful work. I work happily and gratefully full time, all day, every day, taking not one minute for granted. In the ensuing years the paintings have won numerous awards, been featured in both solo and group shows in galleries in New York City, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Washington DC, Denver, CO and at the Granary Gallery on the Island of Martha’s Vineyard, and in juried shows at the Fort Wayne Museum of Art, the Butler Museum of American Art and The State Museum of Pennsylvania. I was selected as a feature artist for the second issue of American Art Collector, and have had work and articles featured in International Artist Magazine, Tea A Magazine, Cape Cod Life Magazine, and received several awards in Artist’s Magazine competitions.

Radishes III
By Dale Zinkowski
Located in Wenham, MA
Dale Zinkowski is a master of still life. His work, reminiscent of Golden Age Dutch still life painting, glows with light and subtle, quiet beauty. This original oil painting shows a bunch of beautifully ripe radishes on a dark ground so that their color shines. The herringbone texture of the linen this piece is painted on adds a subtle depth. This piece is framed in a beautiful warm silver frame, its overall measurements being approximately 11x14 inches. Dale Zinkowski was born in New York and his earliest memories of painting and drawing were from his Grandfather's own work, which hung throughout the home. Fascinated by the world around him, and the ability to capture fleeting moments on paper, he began to draw and paint from nature almost exclusively. From 1993-97, he attended the School of Visual Arts in New York City where he studied the Reilly method with both Marvin Mattelson and John F. Murray. Inspired by the techniques, and hungry for more information, he began copying from the old masters at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  When Murray moved his studio to Tucson, Arizona, Dale followed and focused his studies on the palettes, methods, and materials of artists such as Velazquez and Rembrandt.  In 2012, Dale attended the Florence Academy of Art in Italy, where he pushed his understanding of traditional techniques and materials even further while drawing and painting master copies in museums and painting landscapes in the countryside.  In 2013, Dale returned to New York City, where he immersed himself in the full-time program at Grand Central Atelier studying under Jacob Collins, Ted Minoff, Will St. John and Colleen Barry...

Radishes (Contemporary Still Life Study in Light Box with Diffused Light)
By David Halliday
Located in Hudson, NY
11.25 x 11.25 inches unframed Archival pigment print edition of 12 Some of David Halliday's most engaging works are those from his Box Series in which he merges traditional ideas about light and composition with contemporary experiments. In this series an empty cookie tin becomes a tiny studio for food objects. Halliday carefully styles his photographic subjects inside and, allowing only natural light to seep in through a circular window. The results feel less like still lifes and more like intimate portraits of human sustenance. In these photographs, the fleshy curves of a fig, the slick bodies of sardines, even the homeliest porcini mushrooms possess a degree of nobility, providing a refreshing contrast to the compulsive relationship we so often have with food, reminding us to slow down and savor with gratitude. In this particular image, a bunch of radishes with their deep pink skins are are gently brushed with the natural diffused light, echoing techniques associated with a Vermeer painting! About the work: The Past Still Present: A master of light, New Orleans photographer David Halliday produces lush and elegant images that are both classical and modern. Using window...
