About the Item

Henri Biva (1848-1929) "Still Life at Chinese Vase," large watercolor on paper applied to board signed lower right. Henri Biva (Paris, January 23, 1848 - Paris, February 2, 1929) was a French landscape painter, belonging to the Barbizon School. Henri Biva was born and grew up in Paris in the Montmartre district at 18 rue du Vieux Chemin in a family of artists. It was normal, therefore, for him and his brother Paul (1851-1900), as well as his son Lucien (1878-1965), to take the path of painting. Henri studied at the École des beaux-arts, in the ateliers of Leon Tanzi (1846-1913) and Alexandre Nozal (1852-1929), while he also attended courses by William Bouguereau, Jean-Joseph Benjamin-Constant and Jules Joseph Lefebvre at the Académie Julian. He made his debut at the 1879 "Salon" with two canvases, "Les roses du parc" and "Pavillon d'été du Chateau de Villeneuve-l'Étang." Because of their distinct naturalist style-easily seen in canvases such as Villeneuve-l'étang (soir) and Après le coucher du soleil-Henri Biva's paintings soon gained notoriety and entered both private and public collections. In 1886 Biva exhibited three works at the "Exposition Internationale de Blanc et Noir" (Louvre, Teaching Pavilion, Rue des Tuileries, Paris, March 20-April 20, 1886). He was then a member of the "Société des artistes français," where he was awarded twice. In 1900, he also received a bronze medal at the Universal Exhibition, and in the same year, at the proposal of the Minister of Public Education and Fine Arts, he was awarded the order of Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur. By the turn of the century, Biva had achieved considerable notoriety and had himself become a respected teacher. Defining himself as a naturalist painter, it is possible to find the influences of his teachers in the special care with which he produced his works, both in dealing with lighting effects and in drawing the most minute details. A vision and technique that make him fully belong to the Barbizon School. Biva's style oscillates between Post-Impressionism and Realism, with a notable naturalist component. Thus his painting is characterized by complex strokes and a pure palette imbued with natural light, the light of the very moment in which he captures the image that inspires him. For that matter, it is apparent that Biva paid the utmost attention to the effects of light and atmosphere. This predilection drives him toward landscape and floral still life, subjects in which he excels using both oil paints and the difficult techniques of watercolor and pastel. This large watercolor still retains intact, under the original glass, the freshness of its colors: a Japanese porcelain vase filled with a bouquet of flowers, carnations and chrysanthemums, next to which rests an oriental fan, a subject steeped in that Japanism so much in vogue in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His skill as an academic painter and naturalist can be seen in the precision of the drawing as well as in his study of lighting, from the golden hues of the sunset that, entering through a window, illuminated the subject. The watercolor, on paper applied on board, has no tears or traces of moisture. It has a coeval frame made of wood and gilded pastille. Frame size cm 80 x 67 watercolor cm 63 x 52
