Innokentiy Fateev (Russia, 1980) is originally from Tomsk, Siberia; in 2001 he moved to Faenza, Italy where is currently based. The teaching of his father Yuri, also an artist, and the natural and cultural suggestions brought back from his homeland, directed him towards a figurative painting that was at a first instance of a mere naturalistic-descriptive type, and has then then moved towards a solid formula strictly connected to his need of day-to-day painting. An instinctive painter, Fateev knows no precise thematic or iconographic limits: flowers, natural and urban landscapes, still life and portraits are executed relatively fast with confident and rapid brushstrokes, sign of an achieved executive mastery and a remarkable capacity for visual synthesis. There is nothing impressionistic, however in Fateev’ s work which, on the contrary, tends to consolidate his images of reality in almost plastic and rubbery arrangements with unnatural colour changes and accentuations. The subjects, the cuts of the image, the shots and the represented moments do not intend to unnaturally elevate to a symbolic value or induce a particular reflective attitude. The main elements in Fateev’s partings are his own memories, often filtered through a dreamlike dimension: this allows for his painting practice to proceed smoothly, almost naturally. It is no coincidence that the artist defines his landscapes as "wet-scapes", liquid landscapes: like if the world itself would be a continuous everchanging flux whose instants the artist can only try to grab and condense in still instants filtered through his memory. The light and the vivid brilliance of Italian summer landscapes have played an important role in Fateev’s inspiration, and he surely can now be inscribed to the illustrious tradition of the northern European sensitive souls which have been bewitched by Italy’s overwhelming beauty and grace.
