About the Item

Bieruma Oosting Jeanne Leeuwarden 1898 – 1994 Almen Dutch Painter 'Spring Flowers in a Vase' Signature: Signed lower right and dated 1939 Medium: Oil on canvas Dimensions: Image size 101 x 81 cm, frame size 116 x 97 cm Biography: Adriana Johanna Wilhelmina Bieruma Oosting, better known as Jeanne Bieruma Oosting, was born on February 5, 1898, in Leeuwarden, Netherlands, and passed away on July 14, 1994, in Almen. Jeanne, nicknamed “Pool,” was a versatile Dutch artist, active as a watercolorist, sculptor, etcher, graphic artist, lithographer, illustrator, glass painter, painter and draftsman. Born into a distinguished Frisian family, Jeanne spent her childhood in Leeuwarden and later at the estate De Cloese in Lochem. She received her first watercolor set at the age of eleven, initiating her artistic journey. During her youth in Beetsterzwaag and Lauswolt, she developed a love for nature and music, starting piano lessons at the age of seven. Her art education began at the age of sixteen with Marianne Bleeker in Lochem, followed by lessons in Deventer and Haarlem. Despite her parents’ resistance to an artistic career, Jeanne dedicated herself to art, continuing her artistic path in Amsterdam, Almen, and eventually in Oosterpark, Amsterdam. Jeanne Oosting, renowned for her still lifes, landscapes, portraits, and interiors, followed traditional paths in theme, form, and technique. Her later works, especially colorful flower still lifes, exuded strength. She received various accolades, including the Friesland Painting Prize in 1943 and the Arti Medal in 1971. Her involvement in the art community is evident through the Jeanne Oosting Prize, established in 1970 and continued by the Jeanne Oosting Foundation since 1994. Jeanne Oosting, Knight in the Order of Orange-Nassau, passed away at the age of 96 in Almen. Her rich artistic legacy can be admired at the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam and the Museum Maassluis. A plaque at Oosterpark 76 commemorates her dedication to art from 1964 to 1994.
