About the Item

Artwork sold with frame (57 x 49 x 5 cm) Jeanne Adrienne Perrochet-Junod (1878–1956) was a Swiss sculptor renowned for her contributions to public art in La Chaux-de-Fonds and her role in the development of the regional Art Nouveau movement known as the Style sapin. Born on 1 February 1878 in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Perrochet studied under Charles L’Eplattenier at the local School of Art. L’Eplattenier, a pivotal figure in Swiss Art Nouveau, established a "cours supérieur" in 1905, introducing international Art Nouveau principles adapted to the local context, which significantly influenced Perrochet's artistic direction. Perrochet's oeuvre is marked by several significant public sculptures. Her 1923 work Hommage aux morts, located beside the crematorium in La Chaux-de-Fonds, stands as a testament to her ability to convey solemnity and reverence. Another notable piece, Léda et le cygne (1928), inspired by Greek mythology, is situated in the Parc des Musées of the same city. In 1933, she created a statue of the Reformation figure Guillaume Farel, positioned near the temple bearing his name. Beyond her sculptures, Perrochet also engaged in painting, producing a self-portrait that was featured as the frontispiece in Maurice Jeanneret's 1944 publication Jeanne Perrochet sculpteur. Jeanne Perrochet passed away on 9 October 1956 in her hometown. Her legacy endures through her public artworks and her contributions to Swiss art history, particularly as one of the few female artists of her time to achieve prominence in public sculpture.
