Description:
The painting "Mediterranean Flowers" is a vibrant tribute to nature, depicting an exuberant bouquet of flowers in a dynamic and colorful composition. Serrano’s energetic brushwork gives the painting a near three-dimensional movement, while the thick impasto creates texture and depth. The combination of primary and secondary colors, dominated by shades of yellow and blue, evokes the light and atmosphere of the Mediterranean, particularly in Sitges, where the artist lived and worked.
Artist Biography
Josep Miquel Serrano i Serra (Barcelona, 1912 – Sitges, 1982) was a prominent Catalan painter, known for his landscapes, still lifes, and portraits. During his artistic career, Serrano maintained a close relationship with the bohemian circles and avant-garde movements of the time. Exiled to Paris during the Spanish Civil War, he interacted with key figures of European art, such as Pablo Picasso, Jean Cocteau, and other members of the Paris School.
In the mid-1940s, he returned to Catalonia and settled permanently in Sitges, where he found his greatest inspiration in the Mediterranean landscape and the cultural atmosphere of the town. By the 1960s and 1970s, his work gained significant recognition, characterized by an expressive use of color and a unique treatment of textures. Despite his personal ups and downs, Serrano’s artistic legacy remains one of the most significant contributions to 20th-century Catalan art.
