About the Item

A beautiful still-life of yellow and red tulips in a vase by Karl Nordström (1855-1923), signed 'KN' and dated a tergo 1917. The vibrant flowers are standing in a vase which is placed on a cloth against a bluish-green background. Karl Fredrik Nordström was born on the Swedish west coast on the large island of Tjörn and was a Swedish painter known mostly for his landscape paintings. He came to Stockholm in 1875 and started to study at the Royal Art Academy, where he was tutored by Edvard Perséus, among others. There, he also became close friends with the artists Richard Bergh and Nils Kreuger. In 1881 he travelled to Paris and joined the artists' colony in Montmartre. He was engaged in self-studies and and visited various places in France during the years 1880–1882 where he studied the painting of the impressionists. He debuted at the Impressionists' seventh exhibition salon in 1882 with two landscapes. Then, he moved to Grèz-sur Loing, which was to become a popular refuge for Swedish artists, among others, Carl Larsson, who was lured there by Nordström. Later, the same year, Nordström participated in an exhibition in Gothenburg When exhibiting in Stockholm in 1885 together with many other artist impressionists, he was called by the critics; "The true impressionist of the group" Karl Nordström was one of the founders and one of the leaders of the Artists Union which was founded in 1886. He was for a long time chairman of the association, which was started as a reaction to the conservative Royal Academy of Arts. As an artist, Nordström was considered Sweden's first and perhaps only genuine impressionist. During this time, he also became a close friend of August Strindberg and later married the artist Tekla Lindeström. The couple worked together with, among others, Carl Larsson in the Swedish artists' colony in Grez-sur-Loing. Nordström participated with seven works at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1889 and its Swedish art section; one of the works was purchased by Prince Eugen. After his French tour, Nordström and his wife Tekla returned to Tjörn and spent the summers 1893–1895 in Varberg painting together with Nils Kreuger and Richard Bergh and started was to be known as the so-called Varberg school. In 1893 he participated in The World Exhibition in Chicago, where Anders Zorn was commissioner for the Swedish art department. In 1897 The Swedish Art and Industry exhibition was held and Nordström participated with 19 works in the Swedish art department and was praised for his efforts by the critics. In the same year, he is also exhibited in a Swedish exhibition in St. Petersburg. Further on, he exhibited in The World Exhibition in Paris in the year 1900 where Anders Zorn was again commissioner for the arts department. Nordström sells two works the National Gallery of Norway during an exhibition in 1905. For a few years, between 1906-1908, he also works as a teacher for the Artists Union. Nordström was a very active artist participating in many exhibitions through the years both in Sweden and abroad and was also a very active force in the art world. After 1910, Nordström began to be influenced by the expressionist trends in painting. The present still-life with tulips is a very fine example of his later works. The color tone became lighter and more variable. He continued exhibiting, mostly in Stockholm and Gothenburg and went back to France with his wife for couple of years between 1920-22. In 1915 Richard Bergh was appointed director of the Swedish National Museum and Nordström became his adviser on the transformation of the museum. In 1923, a large solo exhibition was held with his works at Liljewalchs Art Exhibition Halls and later that same year he dies in Stockholm at 68 years of age. Nordström was a pioneer in the field of Swedish art and belongs to the foremost ever in Swedish artistry, above all as a landscape painter. In connection with the exhibition in the spring of 2014 at Prins Eugen's Museum, Waldemarsudde, he was named "Artist of Artists". His works can be seen today at, among others, the Swedish National Museum, Prins Eugens Museum, Waldemarsudde, Thielska Gallery, Norrköping Art Museum, Gothenburg Art Museum.

American Poplar
Located in Stockholm, SE
A vibrant painting depicting an avenue lined with poplar trees in fall colors, prominently featuring a very large, centrally placed yellow poplar. Possibly an American poplar. The artist, Agda Holst, has employed a diverse palette of colors to the poplars, creating a dynamic and colorful composition. This oil on panel is signed and dated by Holst in 1948. The work exemplifies her use of color and form, characteristics that defined her artistic practice throughout her career. Agda Holst was a Swedish modernist painter known for her precise study of form, stylized compositions, and ability to merge structured geometry with expressive color. Her works, often still lifes, portraits, and figure studies, reflect a balance between naturalistic representation and modernist influences such as Cubism and New Objectivity. Holst's artistic journey began in 1907 at the Académie Colarossi in Paris, where she studied under Christian Krohg. Seeking further refinement, she moved to Munich between 1910 and 1911, studying with Julius Exter, known for his teachings in portrait and genre painting. In 1911–1912, she returned to Paris to study under Kees van Dongen, whose bold use of color and strong contrasts left a lasting impression on her work. The early 1920s marked another period of study in Paris, this time under André Lhote, who instilled in her a structured approach to composition and geometric clarity. Holst’s first public exhibition took place in 1916, when she displayed paintings in a bookstore...
