About the Item

This is a rare example of mid 19th century painting by a budding Pennsylvania artist associated with a local school. The work is a floral still life by listed artist Lucinda Carver Church at the young age of 20. Lucinda Church was born into the family of Postmaster Addison C. Church of Kingston, Pennsylvania in 1837. She is known to have gone to New York City, likely to study art and where she exhibited “Study of a Calla” at the National Academy in 1871. Church was listed as Miss L.C. Church of Kingston, Pa. in the exhibition’s entry. Three years later, in 1874, she married Dr. George Marshall at a church in Wilkes Barre. They were recorded as living in New York at the time. Just four years later, she died at age 41 and was buried with her family in Forty Fort, Pa. The painting itself is a lovely rendition of various flowers in a vase. A few white lilies, a colorful tulip and several other flowers make up the arrangement. It is oil on canvas and the painting is bright and cheerful. It is signed by Lucinda Church verso and dated 1858. It is placed at the Wyoming Seminary in Kingston, Pa, perhaps where she was teaching at the time. There had been a professional repair that is evidenced by a patch visible only from the back. The painting measures 14” x. 18” and is in good overall condition. It is housed in an interesting blue and gilt wood frame of the period. At the corners of the frame are positioned copper metal raised rosettes, quite unusual for a frame of that period. Overall framed dimensions are 17” x 21” approximately.

Rare Southern Painting of the French Broad River, North Carolina ca 1890
Located in Baltimore, MD
This is an unsigned, but rare, late 19th century oil on canvas of a view of the French Broad River in North Carolina. It is amongst the world’s oldest rivers. The scene depicted is mountainous and the water is swiftly moving. This would put the location at the northern end of its course, north of Asheville and near the North Carolina and Tennessee border. Much like the Hudson River School in...
