About the Item

Macena Barton Untitled Signed lower right Oil on canvas 24 x 30 inches Provenance Private Collection, California Macena Alberta Barton was an American painter. Barton born in Union City, Michigan, from 1921 to 1925, she attended the School of the Art Institute of Chicago while sustaining herself through employment as a bank clerk and proofreader. Among her instructors were Leon Kroll, who motivated her to examine the works of the Post-Impressionists; additional instructors included John W. Norton, Wellington Reynolds, and Allen Philbrick. Barton rapidly garnered recognition for her compelling and impactful surrealist paintings, subsequently engaging in exhibitions across Chicago throughout her professional trajectory. In 1927, she was conferred the August Peabody Award by the University of Chicago, and she obtained first prizes from the Chicago Galleries Association between 1945 and 1956. Barton held the position of Fellow at the International Institute of Arts and Letters and was a member of both the Arts Club of Chicago and the Chicago Society of Artists throughout her professional life. Barton was an ardent feminist who famously refuted art critic Clarence Joseph Bulliet's claim, published in print, that no woman had produced a nude of exceptional quality, and she is regarded as the first American female artist to create a nude self-portrait. Subsequently, she engaged in an intimate relationship with the married Bulliet, with whom she was often seen in public. Her 1938 oil-on-canvas titled Loaves belongs to the collection of the Illinois State Museum. Woman Sewing, an oil painting produced between 1935 and 1942, was commissioned by the Works Progress Administration and is currently housed in the art gallery at Western Illinois University. A compendium of her writings is housed in the Archives of American Art at the Smithsonian Institution.
