About the Item

Large size French country still life oil painting, signed and dated 1928 by French artist Marcel Bach (1879-1950).  This is an unusual and eye catching still life or nature morte, beautifully painted by a clever, accomplished artist.  Embellished with heavy impasto oils on a thick weave stretched canvas which has texture to the touch throughout.  The artist has managed to take a simple composition, a jug and grapes which sit on a table covered with French linens and make it quite dramatic and eye catching. The freshly picked grapes spill out over white linen.  The hues here are limited yet interesting, the grapes a mixture of black and white to add interest are defined by careful toning and highlights making them completely realistic.  The jug provides the height that firmly grounds the piece.  Let's not forget the window that escapes this rustic loveliness, almost a painting in itself, to view the landscape outside... MORE ABOUT THIS PAINTING: Medium: Oil on stretched canvas Overall size: 32ins x 27ins or 83cms x 69cms (Approx) Date: 1929 Provenance: France.   Signed: Marcel Bach (1879-1950)  Marcel studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux, later settling in Marcillac.  He is quoted in the Dictionary of Little Masters of painting (1820-1920).  He was taken prisoner while serving as a soldier in World War I, he produced a number of works on the subject of the war, one of which a painting just before the battle of Verdun is in print.  However, he was more attracted to the landscapes of south-west France, which he painted in a sober, robust style and in muted tones.  His career led him from Bordeaux to Paris, where he joined the  Atelier de Fernand Cormon.  There was a Provencal stay between 1920 and 1925, and a return to the southwest, to Marcilhac-sur-Célé (Lot) where he had a house.  He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Indépendants in Paris between 1906 and 1932, the Salon d'Automne from 1920 to 1931, and the Salon des Tuileries from 1924 to 1933. The main part of his painting consists of landscapes and still lifes, but he also tried scenes of everyday life, and war painting (he fought in 1914, and was made prisoner of war) . These paintings earned him a first prize in the competition on "the art of war" organized by "Le Matin"; many of his paintings are visible at the War Museum in Versailles. Condition:  This painting is in good condition for the age, but you should expect minor imperfections associated with age, including renovations such as stitching and patching on the back.  The frame is not the original and you should expect imperfections throughout including nails at the corners.
