Matt Higgins
Petals and Stripes, Contemporary Still Life Painting

About the Item

This painting is a vibrant, mixed-media exploration that merges the energy of abstraction with the familiarity of still life. At its center is a vase of five large, loosely defined pink flowers, rendered with gestural black outlines and bold, cartoon-like forms. These flowers, with their almost whimsical shapes, seem to float lightly above a surface that’s alive with painterly texture and color. The stems are painted in bright green, further heightening the sense of vitality and freshness against the layered, textured background. The surrounding environment is electric with contrasting color blocks and expressive brushstrokes. A dominant field of bright yellow, interspersed with thick black vertical and horizontal lines, evokes the impression of blinds or barriers—adding a graphic rigidity that contrasts with the organic softness of the floral arrangement. This yellow-black motif suggests a controlled chaos, perhaps a nod to urban structures or industrial motifs, while the vibrant swathes of red, orange, mint green, and pale pink beneath the vase contribute to a sense of dynamic disarray, like a cluttered table in motion or mid-transformation. What stands out most is the tension between structure and spontaneity, between the stillness of the subject (a traditional flower vase) and the wild, almost rebellious treatment of its surroundings. The drawer-like forms at the bottom edge and the layered horizontal marks imply furniture or domestic space, yet everything is abstracted to the point of ambiguity. The painting is signed on the back. Matt Higgins b. 1987 is both an artist and an art professor based in Philadelphia, PA. He engages in a consistent studio practice, with a primary focus on painting across various bodies of work. He received his BFA from West Chester University in 2011 and his MFA from The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 2017. As well as maintaining a regular studio practice, he teaches at a few schools in the area including Drexel University, Delaware County Community College and Moore College of Art and Design. His art is included in numerous private collections and has been featured in a diverse range of interior design projects, spanning residential properties, corporations, and hotels.
