Michael Carr
Never Ending Gold Rush (acrylic on canvas)

About the Item

This piece began with the idea of exploring the myth of the American West and how it continues to shape our pursuit of wealth, status, and power. I was struck by the image of a lone figure, mid-bite, clutching a nugget of gold like it’s a snack—normal, even comforting. The absurdity of that sparked the whole concept. The cowboy, with his oversized hat and tired eyes, is a caricature of Western masculinity—but also a mirror. He sits frozen in a moment of indulgence, oblivious to the ghostly figure behind him, a symbol of wrath, greed, or even consequence. The background figure is loosely painted, unfinished, because history—especially violent, capital-driven history—is rarely wrapped up cleanly. As I painted, the piece began to comment more directly on our culture’s obsession with gain. The gold nuggets below the figure became symbolic of how we normalize greed—how easy it is to keep reaching for more without asking why. I intentionally left parts of the painting unfinished to reflect that this chase for wealth is never over. The West wasn’t “won”—it just shifted shape. And we’re still chasing gold in new forms: fame, influence, money, legacy. I leaned into the rawness of the brushwork and the surreal narrative quality of the image. The biggest growth came from letting go of the need to polish it—embracing imperfection to serve the message. The piece doesn’t need to be “finished” because neither is the cycle it critiques. I want viewers to feel both amused and unsettled. I want them to ask: What are we really chasing? And what are we leaving unfinished in the process?
