About the Item
This exceptional artwork is currently on display and available for sale at Signet Contemporary Art Gallery and online.
Natalie Toplass’s Dark Materials is a mesmerizing fusion of the natural world’s intricacies and an almost fantastical sense of movement. Set against a rich, moody green backdrop, the painting’s luminous details emerge with striking clarity—velvety petals, the gleam of a fish’s scales, the iridescent shimmer of a butterfly’s wings. At the heart of the composition, a striking betta fish, with its flowing, flame-like fins, swims effortlessly amidst a lush arrangement of oversized flowers, twisting vines, and delicate creatures. The interplay of air, water, and earth blurs the boundaries between worlds, creating a dreamlike harmony between flora and fauna.
Toplass brings together an array of life forms, each rendered with meticulous realism yet positioned in a surreal, weightless environment. A woodpecker, a canary in mid-flight, a curled seahorse—each element seems to exist in its own time and space, yet they converge in a composition that feels both organic and orchestrated. The detailed textures of petals and feathers, the way light catches on translucent shells and glossy leaves, reveal a reverence for nature’s complexity. The swirling motion within the piece gives it an energy that suggests transformation, evolution, and interconnectedness.
Through her masterful control of light and contrast, Toplass elevates Dark Materials beyond a still-life into something almost theatrical, filled with movement and depth. The dark, atmospheric background serves as the perfect stage for the luminous forms that emerge from it, giving the painting a sense of mystery and enchantment. Dark Materials is an evocative celebration of nature’s beauty and fragility, an artwork that invites the viewer to explore its details and uncover its secrets. This exceptional artwork is currently on display and available for sale at Signet Contemporary Art Gallery and online.
Artist biography:
Natalie Toplass began painting professionally in 2003 after moving to Shropshire. She holds a Fine Art degree and a postgraduate qualification in Stage and Set Design.
Growing up in Cheshire, Natalie developed a passion for drawing from an early age. When her parents opened a florist shop, she often sketched unsold flowers at home, carefully rendering them to scale in colored pencil. This early fascination with botanical forms became a defining moment in her artistic journey.
From childhood sketchbooks to large-scale oil paintings, Natalie’s work has evolved into striking, magnified floral compositions. She attributes her affinity for large-scale art to her experience as a scenic artist—an adventurous role that took her around the world and shaped her creative perspective.
Her current works incorporate narrative elements inspired by the weathered beauty of abandoned country houses and the intriguing curiosities she discovers on countryside walks with her dog. These influences help create a visual story within each piece.
Natalie’s goal is to capture the emotions and sensory experiences she feels when immersed in nature. Even the simplest details can evoke deep emotions, and she strives to translate this connection onto canvas. Scale plays a crucial role in her work—by enlarging her subjects, she heightens their presence, inviting the viewer to be enveloped by their beauty and whimsy.
Her technique has been honed through meticulous observation and continuous experimentation, embracing the challenges of artistic growth.
Natalie’s work has been exhibited internationally, including in Tokyo, Singapore, London, New York, and Australia, as well as in her home county of Shropshire. She has been featured in Artists & Illustrators magazine (2007), Shropshire Living (2021), and Collect Art magazine (2023). Additionally, she has delivered masterclasses at the prestigious West Dean College in Chichester.

“Whilst my work is discernibly representative, I wish the viewer to feel drawn into what becomes for me a speculative visual story combining colour, whimsy, natural life and occasionally humour. The medium is oil built up in many layers to create a vivid and translucent finish, this process also supports a depth and intensity of colour enhancing the drama.
I’ve been trying to get to the core of why I have these recurring themes running through my work and after much ruminating I’ve realised the natural life element is enormously important. The natural world displays incredible diversity and tenacity adjacent with transience and fragility. You see the interconnectedness of nature, that you are part of something bigger, something vital that pays no attention to theology or wealth, and I delight in that liberation.
Adjacent to these core values, occasionally acting as a kind of ‘theatrical’ setting, is a still life aspect to my work, drawing ideas from neglected or discarded objects and places- creating a visual connection. It’s these aspects that develop their own provinence, their own stories that I find interesting, and realising that a narrative is fundamental to my painting by combining the two is fascinating and ever evolving.

View AllStill Life with Grapes - original still life realism painting - contemporary art
Located in London, Chelsea
Dramatic and luxurious, Still Life with Grapes is a striking study of contrast, texture, and abundance. The deep blue-black grapes spill onto a delicate porcelain plate, their clustered forms exuding a natural opulence. The twisting vine, reaching upward like a sculptural relic, adds an element of wild elegance, while the surrounding leaves, tinged with autumnal hues, remind us of the inevitable change of seasons.
Titorenkov’s exquisite use of light and shadow heightens the depth of this composition—the grapes shimmer under soft illumination, each one a study in transparency and reflection. The intricate blue patterns of the plate lend an air of timeless refinement, grounding the composition in a sense of tradition. Against the stark darkness of the background, the fruit and its organic details stand out with mesmerizing clarity.
This painting is more than a depiction of fruit; it is a testament to nature’s richness, to the beauty of growth and decay, and to the fleeting, yet eternal, nature of the harvest. Still Life with Grapes speaks of abundance, nostalgia, and the simple pleasures of the earth’s bounty.

"1940 - A Study of Apples" Original Acrylic on Canvas by Tom Perkinson, Framed
By Tom Perkinson
Located in Encino, CA
"1940 - A Study of Apples" is an original acrylic painting on canvas by Tom Perkinson. His use of saturated violets, vivid yellows, and resplendent oranges pushes color to almost-otherworldly realms. Perkinson describes his style of painting as "Romantic Realism," a technique that incorporates two iconic art movements. This style, in combination with the imagination of the artist, produces remarkable results, showcasing Perkinson's keen ability to capture emotion, nature, and life - all in a brushstroke. Both his technical talent and choice of subject matter pair perfectly with its original carved, custom, gilt frame. This masterful work would make a great addition to an art collection and enhance most any home, perfect for those who have an affinity for still lifes, fruit-themed art, impressionism, romanticism, realism, plein-air painting, apples, and nature.
In the artist’s own words:
“My color combinations aren’t in the realm of the natural world, because I don’t paint reality; I’m a painter of fiction. I try to paint a sense of place, as though this scene really does exist. I have had my collectors ask me where this scene is, and I just have to point to my head and say I made it up. Thus, I think of my work as romantic realism. I’m painting a certain reality that I’ve invented, inspired by the fascinatingly rich Southwestern landscape.”
“Color gets all the credit, but it’s the values that do all the work. I don’t begin with sketches, because I want to be free to follow the painting in any direction. I start with washes of different values and tints. Then, I begin to look for a landscape. Several directions will appear to me at this time, and then I have to decide on one of them. During these first few moments, I must establish my distance from the scene. Am I a mile away or just across the river? This is one of the first steps, and I have to decide before I can continue. It’s important for working out the perspective and how things are going to relate to one another in the picture. Then, as the landscape evolves, I look for more images to add to the composition.”

About the Artist: Tom Perkinson, born in Indiana in 1940, has become distinguished as a regional painter, known for his work grounded in the visually dramatic landscape of the Southwest.
As a child, Perkinson discovered he had a love for the natural landscape, and a talent for art. He fostered that talent through classes at the John Herron Institute of Art in Indianapolis, and then at the Chicago Art Academy upon graduating from high school.
He received a degree in art from Oklahoma Baptist University in 1964, before moving on to graduate school at the University of New Mexico. Here, among noted works of a larger scale, he continued to paint the landscape, and it was this work that began to reflect a new fascination with the Southwest. He had found what would become an infinite source of inspiration.
