About the Item

This exceptional artwork is currently on display and available for sale at Signet Contemporary Art Gallery and online. In Underworld, Natalie Toplass constructs a hauntingly poetic vision that intertwines organic forms with an ethereal atmosphere. Against a shadowy, almost abyssal background, soft white flowers emerge in delicate contrast, their petals tinged with subtle veins of color. A striking presence in the composition is the elegantly curling form of an octopus, its sinuous tentacles weaving through the arrangement with quiet fluidity. The contrast between the softness of the flowers and the intricate textures of the cephalopod creates a surreal dialogue between beauty and the unknown. The use of light in this painting is particularly evocative, as it subtly illuminates the intricate details of each subject, casting soft highlights that enhance their three-dimensionality. Feathers drift through the scene, their presence adding to the dreamlike quality of the composition, as though they are remnants of something unseen, lost in the quiet depths of an underwater reverie. The inclusion of a lone butterfly, suspended mid-air, reinforces the painting’s exploration of duality—land and sea, fragility and strength, reality and imagination. With Underworld, Toplass invites the viewer into a world where nature’s elements exist in a state of elegant coexistence, suspended between realms of light and darkness. The painting is a testament to the artist’s ability to transform familiar subjects into something evocative and enigmatic, offering a glimpse into a beautifully surreal vision of life beneath the surface. This exceptional artwork is currently on display and available for sale at Signet Contemporary Art Gallery and online. Artist biography: Natalie Toplass began painting professionally in 2003 after moving to Shropshire. She holds a Fine Art degree and a postgraduate qualification in Stage and Set Design. Growing up in Cheshire, Natalie developed a passion for drawing from an early age. When her parents opened a florist shop, she often sketched unsold flowers at home, carefully rendering them to scale in colored pencil. This early fascination with botanical forms became a defining moment in her artistic journey. From childhood sketchbooks to large-scale oil paintings, Natalie’s work has evolved into striking, magnified floral compositions. She attributes her affinity for large-scale art to her experience as a scenic artist—an adventurous role that took her around the world and shaped her creative perspective. Her current works incorporate narrative elements inspired by the weathered beauty of abandoned country houses and the intriguing curiosities she discovers on countryside walks with her dog. These influences help create a visual story within each piece. Natalie’s goal is to capture the emotions and sensory experiences she feels when immersed in nature. Even the simplest details can evoke deep emotions, and she strives to translate this connection onto canvas. Scale plays a crucial role in her work—by enlarging her subjects, she heightens their presence, inviting the viewer to be enveloped by their beauty and whimsy. Her technique has been honed through meticulous observation and continuous experimentation, embracing the challenges of artistic growth. Natalie’s work has been exhibited internationally, including in Tokyo, Singapore, London, New York, and Australia, as well as in her home county of Shropshire. She has been featured in Artists & Illustrators magazine (2007), Shropshire Living (2021), and Collect Art magazine (2023). Additionally, she has delivered masterclasses at the prestigious West Dean College in Chichester. The medium is oil built up in many layers to create a vivid and translucent finish, this process also supports a depth and intensity of colour enhancing the drama. I’ve been trying to get to the core of why I have these recurring themes running through my work and after much ruminating I’ve realised the natural life element is enormously important. The natural world displays incredible diversity and tenacity adjacent with transience and fragility. You see the interconnectedness of nature, that you are part of something bigger, something vital that pays no attention to theology or wealth, and I delight in that liberation. Adjacent to these core values, occasionally acting as a kind of ‘theatrical’ setting, is a still life aspect to my work, drawing ideas from neglected or discarded objects and places- creating a visual connection. It’s these aspects that develop their own provinence, their own stories that I find interesting, and realising that a narrative is fundamental to my painting by combining the two is fascinating and ever evolving. ”- Natalie Toplass

Intimate paintings represented by unmade beds and tossed sheets, absent of any human evidence, on intentionally blank, somewhat rough backgrounds. The empty bed in these paintings represents a place for grief, isolation or healing. As such, the work speaks to our shared feeling of grief, with the understanding that while we all suffer in our individual ways, suffering is universal. Source material for this work are photographs the artist has both taken and found, and the intimate size of the paintings references the intimate nature of the subject matter. The backgrounds of the paintings are repeatedly painted and sanded, to create a frame and backdrop for the bedding that is flat, yet rough with work and time. The bedding itself is seen from different perspectives, but still indicates a scene of desolation and despair. While the series began in the fall of 2016, recent events—including the pandemic—have provided a new dimension to the work and have compelled Serpick to consider the themes in light of these events. Our forced isolation and the challenges it has brought to our physical and mental health provides an additional shared experience from which to consider grief and eventual healing. Biography Stephanie Serpick is a painter whose work explores themes of isolation, grief, and healing. Her work has been shown in various exhibitions in the U.S. and internationally, and she is a fellow at several residencies, most notably at the Florence Trust Studios in London, MASS MoCA in North Adams, Massachusetts, and the Vermont Studio Center, where she was awarded a full fellowship and stipend to attend. Recent exhibitions include solo shows at Sweet Lorraine Gallery in Brooklyn, the College of Southern Nevada, and a two-person exhibition at The Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute at the Museum of Art at Pratt in Utica NY...

A Surreal Underwater Circus, Painting, Oil on Canvas
By Grace Diehl
Located in Yardley, PA
This is a playful painting that embodies the elements of whimsy and surrealism. The composition features a collection of scallop, spiral seashells and starfish arranged in a glass candy bowl, along with a large conch shell next to it. My research into clownfish inspired me to include fan coral in the painting, as they are known to swim amongst various types of coral. I was surprised to learn that clownfish are only 4-4.5 inches in length. The colorful hues of fan coral add to the overall vibrant theme of the piece. ********** "Just keep swimming, just keep swimming." - Dory, Finding Nemo...

"The Genesis of Femininity" Oil Painting
By Kelly Birkenruth
Located in Denver, CO
Kelly Birkenruth's (US based) "The Genesis of Femininity" is an original, handmade oil painting that depicts a still life of two green granny smith apples and a halved egg shell in situ with a smaller than life bronze statue of a feminine figure. Kelly Birkenruth’s captivating paintings are in the style of contemporary realism while staying firmly grounded in the tradition of the Old Masters. She is able to pull the viewer into her paintings by interweaving emotion with a humanistic quality through her supreme handling of light. Through her portraits and still lifes she is able to evoke sensitivity and empathy, which in turn allows her to create images which transcend mere representation to capture the true essence of her subject. Kelly’s arresting compositions, draftsmanship, use of color and observation of detail allow her to create paintings with a timeless quality. After earning her degree from Pennsylvania State University, Kelly moved to southern California where she began a career as a fashion model. Her agency soon sent her abroad to Paris and Tokyo, where she spent the next several years modeling. When she wasn’t walking the runway, she spent endless hours in the great museums of the world, closely observing and studying the works of the Old Masters. “My time abroad, particularly in Paris, opened my eyes to the vast beauty and power of a great painting. After that I knew I wanted to dedicate my life to the pursuit of Fine Art” said Birkenruth. After returning to the States, Kelly studied at Otis College of Art in Los Angeles, CA. She then continued her studies through workshops and private study with renowned artists such as Daniel Sprick, Steven Assael and Jesus Emmanuel Villarreal. In the spring of 2019...
