About the Item
Dutch artist Nico Heilijgers (1964) works in the tradition of the great seventeenth-century painters.
Heilijgers' paintings are characterized by aesthetics, harmony and atmosphere, whereby the intangible, the unnamable - call it poetry - elevates the image above the simple representation. "I use images from everyday life and try to evoke endearment without sentiment with minimal means, and concealed humor without a burst of laughter."
In recent years, Nico Heilijgers' compositions have been simplified by depicting fewer elements and large areas are left empty. This is how tension is built up. The colors are applied in a looser and faster way. Recently, the artist has also focused on cityscapes.
Nico Heilijgers was educated at the Minerva Academy in Groningen, where he was taught by artists such as Matthijs Röling (1943) and Diederik Kraaijpoel (1928). He lives and works in Utrecht, the Netherlands.
''Archeological Find III' combines beautifully with ''Archeological Find II'' also listed on 1stdibs.

Nico Heilijgers (Utrecht, 1964) graduaded at the Academie Minerva in Groningen, the Netherlands. His teachers were artists like Matthijs Röling and Diederik Kraaijpoel. To master the technique became a very important part of his work. The paintings of Heilijgers characterize esthetics, harmony and ambiance, herewith the poetry of the picture is always more important than the plane image. The paintings by Nico Heilijgers are very much inspired by the traditional way of painting, also in the choices of the topics. He is not afraid to wink at the art history by referring to prominent predecessors in the image. For example, in his Still Lives he is using subjects like fresh lemons, round pomegranates and pharmacy bottles. The subjects are painted in a way, where they don’t seem important as an object, but do function as color area or accent. Abstract values as form, rythm and material make the painting. In his latest work, the compositions are more simple, by using less elements and using some empty spaces. This way he creates more tension in the painting. The colors are more clear and the technique has a more loose touch.
Recently the artist is also painting landscapes and cityscapes.
In the cityscapes people and animals play a big part. The landscapes are more empty and quiet. The landscape is becoming a still life. With these paintings you can feel the admiration Heilijgers has for the impressionists. They represent the essence of painting for him, by treating the light the right way in the use of colors. Heilijgers works in his atelier in Utrecht.

"Sprats" Dutch Still-Life Painting of Sprats, Fish
By Sasja Wagenaar
Located in Utrecht, NL
When you look at this painting "Sprats" by Dutch artist Sasja Wagenaar (1959) from a distance you see a perfectly painted image, but up close a flowing movement of the paint streaks is visible.
Sasja Wagenaar has a unique way of applying shadow and light effects in her paintings. The strong reflection on the dark background is a reference to the camera obscura. This dark room was used since the 16th century by Old Masters (such as Vermeer, as is presumed) to create a detailed reflection of an object.
Sasja Wagenaar is inspired by our classic masters from the seventeenth century, a flourishing period in Dutch painting. The century in which new continents, markets and arts were discovered. At that time in the Netherlands it was a real fad to collect chinoiserie. Originally porcelain, but also Dutch pottery, also known as Delft blue, inspired by Chinese and especially by Japanese bowls and vases.
To quote Sasja Wagenaar: ‘Every platter, every bowl is already so much in itself. They were made with great care through hundreds of hands before they ended up here. Their character must be respected in composing the story that forms a still life. They are as alive as the blossom branches and I try to let them speak together. Slowly the image is created’.
Although rooted in the 17th century Dutch tradition, her work shows her very own signature and is contemporary. As a true Modern Dutch Master...

Hand-signed and dated by the artist. Finished with a gloss varnish.
A black background allows the subject matter of this acrylic painting by artist Lindsay Hall, a cat skeleton, to stand out in stark contrast. An item in a cabinet of curiosities, this memento mori work serves as a pausing point to sit and reflect on the fleeting nature of life, both our own and the creatures around us. Pinks, purples, and oranges peek through the white of the articulated skeleton. These colors are usually associated with warmth and more cheery emotions, so their inclusion in this piece, which many would interpret as somber, is interesting. Ultimately, this work can be seen as a celebration of life and the enduring beauty of nature an appreciation for the anatomy that shapes our world.
Artist Commentary:
I painted this when I lived in Richmond, VA above an oddities shop. Being in such close proximity to various curiosities like taxidermied animals, preserved animal organs, coffins, and the like definitely kept my mind in the spooky mood all year round. The building itself was black and had a giant grim reaper...
