About the Item

"Still Life of Flowers in a Blue Vase"  Pierre Ambrogiani (France, 1905-1985) Oil on panel Circa 1960 15 3/4 x 20 (20 1/4 x 24 1/2 frame) inches If the artists Diego Velázquez (Spain, 1599-1660) and Henri Matisse (France, 1869-1954) had a baby, it’s painting would probably look like this: a strong physical presence with bold almost arresting colors. This is a breathtaking still life (vanitas) that exhibit Pierre Ambrogiani's mastery and command of his medium. This is a dazzling exercise in controlled chaos and the results are stunning. Self-taught artist from a very young age, influenced by Seyssaud and Chabaud, Pierre Ambrogiani defined himself as a “gourmet of colour.” He was encouraged in his beginnings by Antoine Serra who lent him his studio. In 1936, during the inauguration of the Maison de la Culture in Marseille, he met Picasso who became one of his friends. Ambrogiani had his first success in 1938 when the Museum of Fine Arts in Marseille bought one of his paintings.      A very popular and particularly colorful character from Marseille, he travelled the countryside with his car which doubled as his studio, painting en plein air. He moved into a studio on the Quai Rive Neuve in Marseille in 1943.    Renowned for his brightly colored palette and generous use of material, he painted landscapes of the South-the people of beloved countryside-nudes, still lifes of fish and fruit, portraits, etc. He was also a prolific engraver of numerous plates for illustrations. Perhaps because was at one time a postman in Marseille, in 1961, he was awarded with design for a postage stamp. In 1962, he decorated the Immaculate Conception Church in Marseille with frescoes and stained glass. His works reveal a modern Provence, where forms dissolve into color.    Over the years, Pierre Ambrogiani became renowned in France as the leader of the Marseille School of the 40s and 50s. Ultimately, he became a personality of international stature, carrying the South of France’s colors across continents. His palette, blue, lilac, madder, sulfur, green, and orange, follows the colors mentioned in 1888 by Vincent Van Gogh.    Stripping form and drawing, the artist gets closer to an abstraction, willingly figurative. The seemingly unfinished aspect of his paintings eventually imposes an innovative vision of the Provençal landscape. The auteur Marcel Pagnol said of him, “When watching his still lifes, farms, and reapers, it is not ridiculous to pronounce the name of Cézanne.”   From 1948 to 1980, he was part of numerous collective exhibitions of contemporary art in France in  Paris, Marseille, Toulouse, and abroad: New York, London, Oxford, Philadelphia, Turin, and Zurich, etc.   Forced by illness and infirmity to stop painting in 1973, Pierre Ambrogiani died in 1985 and was buried in the Saint-Pierre cemetery in Marseille. His body was transferred to the cemetery of Sault, in the Vaucluse.     With exhibitions in cities such as Paris, New York, London and Stockholm numerous of his pieces can be found in public collections. A brief list: Paris, print room of the National Library of France; Paris, National Museum of Modern Art; Châteauneuf-le-Rouge; Arteum Contemporary Art Museum; Toulon, Museum of Art; Marseilles, Cantini Museum; Marseilles, Regards de Provence Museum; Avignon, Calvet Museum, etc.

Ben-Zion (1897-1987) Flower Piece with Black Vase Oil on board, Hand signed 'Ben-Zion ' lower right, with the artist 's label and label from Duveen-Graham gallery, NY. 16 x 7 3/4 in., unframed as intended, Born in 1897, Ben-Zion Weinman celebrated his European Jewish heritage in his visual works as a sculptor, painter, and printmaker. Influenced by Spinoza, Knut Hamsun, and Wladyslaw Reymont, as well as Hebrew literature, Ben-Zion wrote poetry and essays that, like his visual work, attempt to reveal the deep “connection between man and the divine, and between man and earth.” An emigrant from the Ukraine, he came to the US in 1920. He wrote fairy tales and poems in Hebrew under the name Benzion Weinman, but when he began painting he dropped his last name and hyphenated his first, saying an artist needed only one name. Ben-Zion was a founding member of “The Ten: An Independent Group” The Ten” a 1930’s avant-garde group, Painted on anything handy. Ben-Zion often used cabinet doors (panels) in his work. Other members of group included Ilya Bolotowsky, Lee Gatch, Adolf Gottlieb, Louis Harris, Yankel Kufeld, Marcus Rothkowitz (later known as Mark Rothko), Louis Schanker, and Joseph Solman. Over the course of the group's existence, seventeen artists exhibited as members of The Ten at nine different shows. The group's nine shows were held at galleries and locations around New York City, including one international exhibition in Paris. David Burliuk, Lee Gatch, John Graham, Earl Kerkam, Karl Knaths, Edgar Levy, Jean Liberté...

French Fauvist Post Impressionist Oil Painting Frederick Serger Ecole de Paris
By Frederick B. Serger
Located in Surfside, FL
Frederick Serger Genre: Post Impressionist Subject: Flowers, Poppies Medium: Oil Surface: Panel Frederick Serger (given name Frederick Bedrick Sinaberger) was born in 1889 to a family of Jewish manufacturers in the village of Ivancice near Brno Moravia, a province of Czechoslovakia. Showing artistic talent at a young age, he attended art schools in Brno, Czech, Vienna, Austria and Munich, Germany. During World War I, Serger joined the Austrian Army and served in the Balkans. Once his service ended, he traveled to Paris where he resumed his art training and eagerly joined the Ecole de Paris (School of Paris) artists’ movement. During this period, he was greatly influenced by the Impressionist, Post-Impressionist, and Expressionist movements. While living in Paris, he met and married Helen Spitzer. Serger and his young wife moved from Paris to Scoczow, a city on the Polish-Czech border. They remained in Scoczow for 12 years and he continued to work as an artist, exhibiting in museums in Cracow and Warsaw, Poland. He also showed at the Paris Salon de Tuilleries and the Salon d’Automne. He was part of the generation of expat artists, mostly jewish known as the School of Paris. They created art in the styles of Post-Impressionism, Cubism and Fauvism. The group included artists Marc Chagall, Chaim Soutine, Amedeo Modigliani and Piet Mondrian. Associated French artists included Pierre Bonnard, Henri Matisse, Jean Metzinger and Albert Gleizes. Many École de Paris artists lived in the iconic La Ruche, a complex of studio apartments and other facilities in Montparnasse on the Left Bank, at 2 Passage Dantzig, built by a successful sculptor, Alfred Boucher, who wanted to develop a creative hub where struggling artists could live, work and interact. A significant subset, the Jewish artists, came to be known as the Jewish School of Paris or the School of Montparnasse. The core members were almost all Jews, included Emmanuel Mane-Katz, Abraham Mintchine...
