William Schwartz was born in Smorgon, Russia, in 1896, one of nine children in a poor family. He studied art at an early age, earning a scholarship at the Vilna Art School in Russia, 1908–12. He immigrated to the United States at age 17 in 1913, living in New York with his sister for eight months and then moving to Omaha, Nebraska, to live with his brother in 1915. Working as a house painter, he turned his attention to art, studying briefly with J. Laurie Wallace at the Kellom School in Omaha before moving to Chicago. He entered the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) in 1916, studying with Ivan Trutnev and Karl A. Buehr, and graduating with honors in life drawing, portraiture, and painting in 1917. He supported himself as a tenor singer in vaudeville, concerts, and opera and received favorable reviews, but he chose to pursue painting instead of singing. His circle of artist friends included important Chicago modernists Aaron Bohrod, Malvin and Ivan Albright, Archibald Motley Jr., and Anthony Angarola...

Our painting is the painting he exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants in 1913 under the number 2032 and titled "Flowers and Japaneries". It represents a still life with a bunch of flowers, a magnificent basket of oranges, a pomegranate and a Japanese sculpture with a little fisherman with a red Koi carp. 2500 years ago, when the son of Confucius was born, he received as a gift from King Shoko of Ro, a fish that was first called Koi. It represents the symbol of strength, because this fish was the only one able to go up the steam of the Yellow River. Owning a koi will long remain the prerogative of the Japanese nobility.

To get to know us, we visited the artist in his studio in Leeuwarden. a centrally located donkey and a window on the Noorderlicht dominate the space together with the still life that he is currently working on. Fannie Burr was a highly accomplished painter and one of our earlier American women artists! This very contemporary, fresh and appealing floral study was done circa 1895!! The rarity of this and its virtuoso execution could lend it to being in the collection of a Connecticut museum. Along with her sister Jennie, they were known as the "Burr Sisters". They did focus on paintings of still life and nature which would have been acceptable for a female artist of the period. Fannie studied at the Yale School of Art and then the Art Students League in New York. She was assistant to Julian Alden Weir a major CT impressionist, while he was at Yale teaching.
The composition is avant-hard for this date! It is in an exceptional hand carved 22 karat frame of high value, Art Nouveau style.
In the estate of 700 or so paintings by Fannie and Jenny Burr it was found that they did not sign most of the paintings. They were not selling their works or represented so much so this is understandable. This has a great provenance!
