Enid Munroe Mid Century Modernist Oil Painting Still Life with Fruit and Bread
Located in Surfside, FL
Genre: Modern Subject: Kitchen still life with pineapple, sourdough bread and lemons Medium: oil paint, done in a sgraffito, impasto somewhat brutalist technique Surface: board Country: United States Dimensions: 18 X 24 Being sold unframed Enid Munroe re-establishes the aesthetic worth of ordinary manufactured objects within the basic form language of Cubism. In her painting the artist uses trompe-l'oeil to render her composition, involving realistic imagery in order to create the optical illusion that the depicted objects exist in three dimensions. Enid Munroe is an artist and teacher who is well known regionally for her paintings, works on paper and Gold leaf, silver leaf, trompe l’oeil collage and assemblage series. She has been included in numerous invitational and juried exhibitions both nationally and regionally. Her works are in leading public, corporate and private collections including the Brooklyn Museum and the National Museum of American Art. Munroe cites painter Georgia O’Keeffe as one her influences and sources of inspiration. “Georgia O’Keeffe really helped lift the concept of women as artists,” stated Munroe. Munroe lived and worked in Mexico, Japan and Italy before settling in Connecticut. She is the author of An Artist in the Garden: A Guide to Creative and Natural Gardening (Henry Holt & Co, 1994) and has been active in regional art events including the founding of the annual Pequot Library...

Rainbow Harvest, Oil Painting
Located in San Francisco, CA

Artist Comments
Artist Jinny Tomozy presents a realistic still life of vibrant and colorful produce - an intimate look at the gardener's prize. "I can not resist the bounty of a fresh harvest," says Jinny. The saturated hues of the fruits that have been nurtured all summer finally come to reveal themselves. The shine of the plump globes displays a dance of highlights among the gathering.

About the Artist
Artist Jinny Tomozy reveals the most tender aspects of nature through the sculptural forms of flowers. Her strikingly realistic floral watercolors connect us to the familiar emotions we experience in viewing the spectacular or mundane circumstances of this place we call home. "I am captivated by light touching a surface, the nuances of a shadow, interplays of color, and of other complex facets of our visual world," shares Jinny. After twenty-two years as a teacher of foundations in art education and placing her creative aspirations on hold, she now pursues art full-time and spends more of her days painting and creating. Jinny captures tangible feelings of space and time in her studio at Reno Art Works. In this non-profit gallery, a community of eleven artists works in an emerging art...

"Still Life of Fruit " Albert Swinden, American Abstract Association, AAA
By Albert Swinden
Located in New York, NY
Albert Swinden (1901 - 1961) Still Life of Fruit, 1937 Oil on canvas 18 x 30 inches Provenance: Graham Gallery, New York Albert Swinden (1901–1961) was an English-born American abstract painter. He was one of the founders of the American Abstract Artists, and he created significant murals as part of the Federal Art Project. Albert Swinden was born in Birmingham, England in 1901. When he was seven, he moved with his family to Canada, and in 1919 he immigrated to the United States. He lived in Chicago, where he studied for about a year and a half at the Art Institute. He then relocated to New York City, where his art education continued briefly at the National Academy of Design. He soon changed schools again, to the Art Students League, which he attended from 1930 to 1934. He studied with Hans Hofmann and gained an appreciation for Synthetic Cubism and Neoplasticism. According to painter and printmaker George McNeil, Swinden "could have influenced Hofmann ... He was working with very, very simple planes, not in this sort of Cubistic manner. Swinden was working synthetically at this time." While still a student, Swinden began teaching at the Art Students League, in 1932. Swinden married Rebecca Palter (1912–1998), from New York. Their daughter, Alice Swinden Carter, also became an artist. Carter, who attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, received an award from the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston for her large sculptures. Swinden was hired for the Federal Art Project (FAP) of the Works Progress Administration (WPA), and he is best known for the murals which he painted as part of that project. In 1935, New York City Mayor Fiorello La Guardia attended the opening of the inaugural exhibit at the Federal Art Project Gallery, accompanied by Audrey McMahon, New York regional director for the Works Progress Administration/Federal Art Project. Among the works on display was Abstraction, a sketch by Swinden; it was the design for a mural planned for the College of the City of New York. A newspaper account described it as consisting of "brightly colored T-squares, triangles and rulers in horizontal, vertical and diagonal positions". La Guardia asked what it was, and upon being told it was a mural design, he said he didn't know what it depicted. Someone joked that it could be a map of Manhattan. The displeased mayor stated that "if that's art, I belong to Tammany Hall." (Tammany Hall, which the Republican mayor referenced, was the New York Democratic Party political society.) Fearing that the mayor's negative attitude could jeopardize the future of abstract art within the Federal Art Project, McMahon dispatched an assistant to summon an artist who could speak to the mayor in defense of abstraction. The assistant returned with Arshile Gorky. Swinden played an important role in the founding of the American Abstract Artists. In 1935, he met with three friends, Rosalind Bengelsdorf, her future husband Byron Browne, and Ibram Lassaw, with the goal of exhibiting together. The group grew and started meeting in Swinden's studio, which adjoined those of Balcomb and Gertrude Greene...

Sean Farrell, "Lit Up Life", 12x9 Red Cherry Fruit Still Life Oil Painting
Located in Saratoga Springs, NY
"Lit Up Life", is a 12x9 oil painting on board by artist Sean Farrell. Featured is an arrangement of freshly picked red cherries overflowing a polished gold metal bowl. The graceful direction of the cherry stems create movement and flow in this harmonious piece. Strong shadows cast onto the linen cloth underneath. Rich tones of orange and reds contrast the green stems. About the artist: “As I paint at my easel each day in the studio, I approach creating art with the idea of continually developing my artistic understanding and enhancing my personal expression,” writes Sean Farrell of his philosophy of life as an artist. Farrell, who grew up in a small town where there were few opportunities for formal art education, began drawing on his own at a young age and through intense study of the great artists he found in library books began to nurture his innate talent. He writes of his younger years, “Looking at great paintings always excited me and by visiting museums [and] studying numerous art books…I gradually began to increase my artistic understanding,” which led Farrell to teach himself to paint with oils in the late 1980’s and then eventually to attend a painting workshop in New Mexico in the early 1990’s where he met numerous professional artists, who inspired him to a full-time artistic career. Internationally, the prestigious Florence Biennale invited the artist to participate and exhibit work in Florence, Italy. NYARTS Magazine covered the exhibition and in their published review gave the following praise to the works of Sean Farrell… “Works deserving special attention was Sean Farrell’s exquisitely painted flower and fruit arrangements. Eye-catching with his use of dramatically bold colors mixed with delicate detail in a very modern old-master style.” Choosing to travel extensively throughout Italy and also to other regions of Europe over attending art school, the artist has studied and learned from the great master works in the history of art. His paintings reveal his affection for the 17th century Italian and Dutch painters while still remaining truly unique. Mr. Farrell’s works are distinctive for their elegant and graceful compositions, his rich jewel like color, and an elevated sensitivity to the beautiful nuances of light. His works reveal a master’s touch and a quiet ease. Sean Farrell is internationally recognized and a highly collected artist. He is known for his vivid and luminous oil paintings...
