Loftus is known for his meticulous realist oil paintings that feature ocean-scenes, babbling brooks, mountain ranges and their vistas, as well as figures and people. Peter Loftus was born in 1948, in Washington DC. He received a BFA in painting from the Maryland Institute College of Art, in 1971. In 1974, Loftus earned an MFA from the University of Pennsylvania. Drawn by the glorious California light, Loftus moved to Santa Cruz in 1975. He has lived and painted there ever since. Loftus taught at both University of California at Santa Cruz and Cabrillo Community College between 1975, through the present (at UCSC). He taught Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced Drawing, and Painting, in both oil and aqueous media. During that time, he also sustained a rigorous exhibition schedule, showing regularly on the East and West coasts; in New York at Fischbach Gallery, and San Francisco at William Sawyer Gallery and later Hackett-Freedman Gallery. In addition, Loftus has participated in a number of group exhibitions. These include: American Realism: 20th Century Drawings and Watercolors (and accompanying book), San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, New Horizons in American Realism: Flint Institute of Arts, Flint, MI. Cherry Blossom Dream by Sophia Chalklen is an original painting. One day I was sat looking up at a cherry blossom tree and thought how beautiful it looked from that angle. I took a photo and had to paint it. The beautiful light breaking through made it even more beautiful. I have used various metallic pink leaf as well as 24ct gold leaf on the trunk to create that extra sparkle and magic as the light hits the painting. Due to the nature of the metallic leaf it looks different in different light. Contemporary artist Sophia Chalklen sold online and in our gallery at Wychwood Art. Sophia has always had a strong passion for Art ever since she was a child. Sophia studied at Winchester school of Art where she completed a BA specialising in Textile design. After achieving her BA she went on to become a Freelance Printed Textile designer for a small company in London. Shortly after that she managed to get a job as a Fine Jewellery Designer for the Crown Jewellers, Asprey and Garrard Bond St. Sophia became a specialist in designing high end Jewellery, accessories, and ornaments for English and Middle Eastern Royalty and the Elite. She also designed a great variety of items including rings, Jewellery Suites, watches, cufflinks, Jewel incrusted clocks, tiaras and precious ornaments. This piece was inspired by a feeling of tranquillity walking through a bed of flowering heather. I loved the combination of birch trees amongst the beautiful pinks and lilacs. She also designed a great variety of items including rings, Jewellery Suites, watches, cufflinks, Jewel incrusted clocks, tiaras and precious ornaments.
