About the Item

"Papaya & Mexican Pitcher" is an original signed oil painting by Warren Brandt. Brandt, an American painter originally influenced by Abstract Expressionism, became a "child of Matisse" around 1966-67 by adopting the realist mode of he French artist without becoming illusionistic. Beginning in the 1970s, his still lifes--like those of Matisse--favored design, high color, pattern, and an emphasis on the "good things" of the "good life." In Papaya and Mexican Pitcher from 1981, Brandt employs a Matissesan use of color and patternmaking devices that enhance the decorative nature of the work. The Mexican textile that serves as a tablecloth is the most obvious pattern in the still life and serves to flatten the picture plane, establishing a decorative surface. The two shades of blue in the background, along with the equal weight of the papaya and bowl of fruit on the left and right respectively, and the Mexican pitcher in the middle, form four decorative quadrants in the picture. The curved lines of the fruit, their containers, and the pitcher all create subtle patterns throughout the work. 26" x 29" art 26 1/4" x 29 1/4" frame "Mr. Brandt was born in Greensboro, N.C., and moved to New York after high school, attending Pratt Institute at night. He studied with Yasuo Kuniyoshi at the Art Students League and, after five years as an official portraitist in the Army during World War II, continued his education under the G.I. Bill. He studied with Philip Guston and Max Beckmann at Washington University in St. Louis. All the while he kept close ties with Abstract Expressionists in New York, and his art reflected their influence. Brandt’s work is defined by many art critics by his use of brilliant, highly chromatic color in his Matisse-esque nudes, still lifes, and studio scenes and his expressionistic brushwork, much like that of Willem de Kooning, all while incorporating the bold strength of line characteristic of his Washington University teacher, Max Beckmann."
