Tiziano Vecellio (Pieve di Cadore 1490 - Venice 1576) Workshop
Putti fighting on the Ponte dei Pugni in Venice
Venetian school, late 16th century
Oil on canvas 105 x 144 cm - In frame 128 x 167 cm
Provenance: Lepke Kunst-Auction-Haus, Berlin, auction of 1 June 1926, lot 150, as Tiziano Vecellio, attributed to Wilhelm von Bode (1845-1929)
Of the more than four hundred bridges that dot the countless canals of Venice, there is one in particular that is linked to one of the city's most unique historical events: the Ponte dei Pugni, located in the Dorsoduro district near Campo San Barnaba, which owes its name to an ancient tradition, now abandoned, that provided the theme for our interesting painting. It was once a tiny battlefield suspended above the canal, where a real “War of Fists” took place, unusually depicted here with children fighting animatedly.
Always considered one of Venice's most heartfelt traditions, dating back to the 15th century but then banned in the 18th century, it is still commemorated today during the Venice Carnival: it was nothing more than a brawl between the inhabitants of two opposing factions, the Castellani and the Nicolotti, who clashed on the upper part of the bridge, which at the time had no railings, with the aim of throwing their opponents into the water.
The painting, which belongs to the Venetian school of the 16th century, is traditionally attributed to Titian (Pieve di Cadore 1490 - Venice 1576), made in 1926 by art historians Wilhelm von Bode (1845-1929), founder of the Kaiser Friedrich Museum in Berlin in 1904, Max Jakob Friedländer (1867-1958) and Hermann Voss (1884-1969).
Nevertheless, for reasons of caution, we prefer to attribute the painting to his workshop, leaving open the possibility that the master may have taken part in the curious composition.
Many of Titian's works feature cherubs, which are not simply decorative elements but have an important symbolic role: they often represent youth, innocence and light, but can also have connections with deeper themes such as love, life and death.
The composition of our painting closely follows one of the friezes, entitled “The Fight of the Children on the Bridge”, which Titian created for his palace in Venice, located in the Biri district of the Cannaregio neighbourhood. Two similar works, in the form of friezes, are owned by Count Lanskoronski in Vienna and Bruckmann in Munich.
Below is a reproduction of a contemporary engraving by a Venetian monogramist. The image suggests a sense of vitality that captures the viewer's soul, and for this reason it must be interpreted allegorically: these little children intent on having fun are therefore a hymn to life and an invitation to abandon oneself to the impulses and sensations it offers us.
By way of comparison, we can mention the large altarpiece of the “Madonna Assunta” (Church of S. Maria Gloriosa dei Frari in Venice), where many of the poses of the cherubs depicted are mirror images of those in our painting (see photos of details).

Venus Paolo Fiammingo Paint Oil on canvas Old master 16th Century Italian Art

Venus lying in a landscape
Oil on canvas 116 x 150 cm.
In antique frame 136 x 170 cm.
The work is accompanied by a critical card by Dr. Federica Spadotto
The splendid painting proposed sees portrayed, bare and stretched out on a red brocade cloth in gold sprinkled with roses, a refined and sensual Venus, in a composition with a profound symbolic value, and arriving at the perfect representation of the Renaissance woman who, like Venus, becomes an allegory love, eros, beauty and fertility.
The canvas is part of the prestigious Venetian artistic and cultural environment of the second half of the sixteenth century, whose distinctive distinctive trait can be traced back to its cosmopolitan vocation. This characteristic, as Dr. Spadotto noted in her in-depth study, belongs to the same physiology of the Venetian capital, that is, being a distinctly commercial city located in a strategic point with respect to trade. Representing one of the liveliest ports in the Mediterranean also meant witnessing the continuous passage not only of goods, but of men, ideas, suggestions from distant countries, which influenced not only the taste of their people, but above all art.
This happened thanks to the circulation of prints, as well as pictorial specimens, to which are added the stays of great foreign artists and, above all, the permanence in the capital of a non-negligible number of Dutch, Flemish and German masters.
An emblematic case in this regard comes from Pauwels Franck (Antwerp, 1540 - Venice, 1596), better known as Paolo Fiammingo, who established himself in his native city at a young age - in 1561 a figure enrolled in the Guild of San Luca - and arrived in Venice in 1573. .
He resided in Venice from 1584 until his death, although the stylistic and formal references of some of his works have led critics to believe that in previous years he had undertaken a journey to central Italy, or to Florence and Rome, where he would have metabolized the lively cultural debate that permeated these cities and which, on the other hand, seemed completely absent in Venice.
Here Paolo will be fascinated by the sense of color and by the atmospheric component fixed on the canvas by Jacopo Tintoretto (Venice 1518 - 1594), of which he becomes a collaborator, to undergo, around 1590, the suggestion of Paolo Caliari...

Angels Flower Garzi Paint Oil on canvas Old master 17/18th Century Italian Art

Still life of fruit supported by three angels
Oil on oval canvas
116 x 91 cm., Framed 140 x 119 cm.
Authentication on a photograph by Prof Giancarlo Sestieri, who attributes the work to the sphere of Luigi Garzi
This magnificent canvas, depicting a sumptuous composition of fruit supported by three prosperous winged cherubs, from which comes a parchment bearing the Latin expression "Amor est vitae essentia", is to be placed in the production of a Roman author active between the second half of XVII century and the first of the following century.
The iconography that sees represented cherubs with fruit or flowers is frequent in the Baroque period, especially in the Roman area, starting from the 1600s, with that particular depictional tendency aimed at illusionistic and frivolous images, to a type of paintings or frescoes of strong value decorative, intended for the private context and depicting jubilation of cherubs, angels or cherubs, and of which our canvas represents a perfect example.
We can recall, among the most illustrious iconographic precedents, the elegant mirrors painted by Mario Nuzzi and Carlo Maratta that adorn the hall of Palazzo Colonna in Rome, and again the canvas preserved in the Rouen museum and the similar ones in Palazzo Chigi in Ariccia, with the collaboration for the figurative parts of Filippo Lauri.
The commercial and furnishing success of similar works is also testified by authors such as Guglielmo Cortese known as Borgognone (1628 - 1679), Franz Werner Von Tamm (1658 - 1724), Giovan Battista Gaulli (1639 - 1709), Giovanni Paolo Castelli known as Spadino (Rome 1650 - 1740) and the aforementioned Carlo Maratta (1625 - 1713)
The work, studied by Giancarlo Sestieri, was brought closer to the sphere of the eclectic Pistoian painter Luigi Garzi, one of the protagonists of Roman painting in the decades of transition between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. In our painting we can find the typical elements of his painting: the soft and delicately chiaroscuro light, the sculptural classicism of the figures as well as the stupendous luministic and chromatic effects.
Luigi Garzi's training and artistic activity took place in the Eternal City and he was in effect a Roman artist. He moved to Rome from Pistoia, his hometown at a very young age, and joined the atelier of Andrea Sacchi, who directed his studies towards classicism, comparing himself with the works of Raphael, Domenichino and Nicolas Poussin, but also with the Emilian one. , with particular attention to the school of Guido Reni.
But the Emilian examples were undoubtedly preceded, particularly by Giovani Lanfranco, who modeled his taste and style, together with a modulated cortonism, while those pre-eighteenth-century sensibilities are due to the lesson of Carlo Maratta.
However, there is no doubt that the painter oriented his personality without ever bowing to imitation, reaching a refined elegance and autonomy of language, as the canvas in question clearly demonstrates in which the different influences find a refined amalgamation in perfect harmony with the baroque evolution between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, indicating a dating to its earliest maturity.
These attitudes led the painter to obtain awards and prestigious commissions as soon as possible, such as the frescoes of Palazzo Borghese...
