Few cities have had their personality so shaped—and reshaped—by time as New York City. Photographer Arthur King presents a series of black and white silver gelatin prints documenting the city as it truly was from 1955 – 1958 —alive with texture, tension, and above all, humanity. As a young student at Pratt Institute, he roamed the streets with his camera, compelled to capture the ephemeral moments that defined daily life. “The stark, raw reality of life, rich and visceral, made it seem imperative to capture quick images before they disappeared—a fleeting memory, never to be repeated,” he writes. While today’s image of New York is often abstracted into a global monolith of culture and finance, these photographs return us to the people who shaped the city with their presence—workers, neighbors, passersby. Dark, lyrical, and intimate, his images offer rare and tender glimpses into a place where history is etched into every street corner. Born in Pittsfield, MA, King had a long career in Design and Communications and currently lives with his wife, Sarah Barton-King, in Philmont, NY.

Street Dance 3.12 x 16 (Graphic Abstract Black & White Grid Urban Photograph)
By Elliott Kaufman
Located in Hudson, NY
archival chromogenic digital print image size: 19 x 23 inches unframed Elliott Kaufman describes New York City as a laboratory in constant movement. In his series “Street Dance,” Kaufman photographs repetitive actions of passersby – such as riding a bicycle or entering a subway station – from a single vantage point and arranges the images in a grid. Key to his series, Kaufman explains, was calculating how changing light would affect the environment. “The bicycles had to be back-lit at the very end of the day,” he says. “The subway steps were calculated so that the light would cast perfect north/south shadows.” He also shot a varying number of exposures at each scene to relay the “staccato rhythm” he sought – as many as 225. “The camera catches the commonality of movement,” he says, “until what endures is a patter of dance and motion.” A number of artists have led him in this direction, including the Bauhaus and the collaborative media which they pioneered, the 1977 film Powers Of Ten, which depicts the relative scale of the universe in factors of ten, Mike Figgis...

Ankony Farm ( Contemporary Rural Landscape Sepia toned Photograph with Barns)
By James Bleecker
Located in Hudson, NY
Ankony Farm pigment print on watercolor paper 13 x 16, edition of 25 $1500 20 x 24, edition of 25 $2500 This Sepia-toned print of Ankony Farm was taken by photographer, James Bleecker. The photograph depicts the barns on a farm in Rhinebeck, New York. The light reflects beautifully over the landscape, shining through an overcast sky. Artist Statement: These photographs span the last decade of nearly four that I have worked in the Hudson River valley. While I have photographed landscapes, towns and cities, I have chosen a selection of rural scenes for this show. All are in Columbia County except “Allee,” (Tuxedo Park) and Quimby Farm (Marlborough). My photography spans four decades of living in the Hudson River Valley. While my Dutch ancestors settled here early - Bleecker and Verplanck are common place names - I don't know what, if any, pull that fact exerts. Certainly I'm attracted to the layers of time exposed here; in ancient stone walls, leaning barns, faded mansions and mill towns. The valley exudes boom and bust, love and leavings. About the Artist: James Bleecker photographs the landscapes and architecture of his native New York State. Since 1983 his work has spanned independent fine art photography and commercial architectural photography. Much of his work has been commissioned by museums and historic preservation groups in the Hudson River valley. About James’s work, Edgar Munhall, Curator Emeritus of The Frick Collection, has written, "James's work is powerful and mature. Rigorously composed and technically perfect, his photographs can reduce you to tears by their beauty." Collections: Berkshire Museum Barry...

Brassaï Original Black & White Photograph of a Street Fair
By Brassaï
Located in New York, NY
BRASSAI (Hungarian–French, 1899-1984) Street Fair on the Place d'Italie, 1931 Medium: Sheet-fed Gravure Printing Date: 1970's Printed in the USA Image: 10 1/2 x 8 inches Framed: 14 1/2 x 12 inches Although his real nameis Gyula Halasz, he took the name Brassai from his birthplace, and it means someone who comes from Brasov. He used the name all his adult life and is known throughout the world as Brassai. He was of Hungarian ethnic origins. Brasov in Transylvania has been a part of Romania since the end of the First World War, and that region is still largely populated by ‘Romanain-Hungarians.’ Two of these became well known in the film industry: Bela Lugosi and Gabriel Pascal. When the Austro-Hungarian Empire was dismantled after the War, most of its territories were distributed amongst a number of nations. It was at this time that Transylvania returned to its earlier identity as part of Romania. Brassai had served in the Austro-Hungarian cavalry for the last year of the War, 1917-1918. After he settled in Paris in 1924, Brassai never returned to his homeland, remaining in exile for the rest of his life. His parents continued to live in Brasov but joined him for long visits in Paris. In 1949 Brassai became a French citizen, having been a stateless person since 1947. He fell in love with a French woman, Gilberte Boyer, and they married in 1948. Gilberte worked closely with her husband as he pursued his photographic career, helping him develop prints in his dark-room, and often writing descriptions of the subjects and personalities. It was also in 1949 that a book with 207 photographs of Picasso’s sculptures was published, with photographs by Brassai. He and Picasso became friends and the latter asked him to photograph his work for this volume. Brassai was a frequent visitor to Picasso’s studio and there he took several portraits of the artist. Brassai has become one of the leading photographers of the twentieth century with collectors all over the world seeking his work. In an era which produced several brilliant and inspired photographers, not least Brassai’s friend Man Ray, he was able to capture a quality of magic in the atmosphere, bordering on the supernatural. Many of his pictures were taken at night or in fog, a frequent condition in Paris in the early part of the twentieth century. Even his day time photographs capture a moment of eerie transition between the mundane and the surreal. He is on the doorstep of another world where time stands still. Light becomes spectral as if it is the breath of an invisible power. Figures seem set in amber. Wet cobbles seem to slither and flow. A Master of capturing the ordinary, Brassai saw things as they were but transmuted the scene through his use of the lens into something outside the ordinary. Brassai was a familiar figure prowling round Paris after dark with his camera and tripod and heavy bag of glass photographic plates. He was sometimes accompanied by Ernest Hemingway, Henry Miller, or Leon Paul...
