"The thought process that led to this image from Norway was to be long of parody and playful. The camera should dive into the pages of a Polar explorer storybook for 95% of the image and then dive into the pages of Vogue for our lead - Brooks Nader. Brooks recently appeared on the front cover of the 2023 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit edition and I knew that she was perfect for this role. Her default position is to have fun and get into character which makes her easy to direct and the camera loves her. It was a long way for her to come for a one-day shoot, but she approaches every job with sensibility and gusto. To juxtapose a Sports Illustrated Swimwear model next to some frosty and unrefined explorers from bygone days is a risk conceptually if there is no wider context. In these ideas, there is every chance the result can be a bit one dimensional and gratuitous. I am paranoid of the mundane which means we tend to give these ideas a great deal of thought. In this case, the structural background was helpful and I think the fire and the falling snow were necessary extras to give the story a broader narrative. We tend to work almost always in monochrome, but we do think that this photograph works well in colour as well because of the limited colour range and the sense of warmth offered from the fire and its glow." - David Yarrow Bio: David Yarrow has built an unrivaled reputation for capturing the beauty of the planet’s remote landscapes, cultures and endangered animals. Born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1966, he is now an internationally acclaimed fine art photographer and Europe’s best selling wildlife photographer. "In my deliberation over the Pirates in the Caribbean project, there were two overriding personal filters. The first was to avoid being formulaic and the second was my sense that it would be commercial suicide to be too earnest. Pirates are mythological figures and whilst what they did was very serious, I was only too aware of the dangers of us taking ourselves too seriously in any revisionist portrayal. We should have fun; just as Disney did with their blockbuster franchise. The pirates we had assembled in Anguilla looked the part and our giant canvas of the pirate boat offered the best context in the background. The key building blocks were in place on this set, we just needed ‘the x factor’. I played with half a dozen ideas to complete the story in the foreground and there was one concept that seemed to stand out - the arriving pirates must have an encounter. Encounters represent a dilemma for still photographers who can’t do “over the shoulder two takes”. We have the one chance and that tends to mean that we lose one face. But I saw how we could use that to our advantage in that anonymity might work if it told a story. Daniela Braga, the Brazilian Victoria’s Secret model and a sweetheart, was on set with us. She is smart, fun loving and she fully embraced the idea I had in mind. I think the photograph works well. As someone wryly said, those pirates who lost an eye must have been cursing themselves."

The Longhorn Saloon

The Longhorn Saloon West Texas - 2023 Edition Size: 12 + 3 APs Available sizes: 52 X 80 inches 71 X 113 inches All prints are on 315gsm Hahnemühle Photo Rag Baryta Paper and varnished after processing to give both endurance and sheen. Each is signed, dated and numbered on the front. Price includes David Yarrow's custom black ash frame, white archival matting and protective UV acrylic. "From the outside, The Longhorn Saloon looks like a bar where the most ancient of vices are catered for daily. It has the whiff of a place where cowboys are tough, women are tougher and there is little rule of law. It is the Wild West at its cartoonish best. The Coen Brothers should check it out. The Longhorn is clearly a Texas bar and we would say that it’s in West Texas, but more than that, we are sworn to secrecy. It’s too good a place to get crowded and besides, the cattle clearly need some room to roam. Projects like these tend to be fun for everyone involved and when we do film at dusk, there is never a doubt that after the wrap, some local cast or crew will invite us home for a Texan Barbecue. They score very high in hospitality in Texas and we love our nights out near the Mexican Border...

Oil

Located in Chicago, IL
Oil Marathon, Texas - 2023 Large 56” x 86” Unframed 71” x 101” Framed Standard 37” x 57” Unframed 52” x 72” Framed “Despite our acute awareness of the environmental harm of carbon omissions, there is something incongruously appealing about the early days of the oil industry. It is difficult to articulate the reason for the appeal, but perhaps it’s because we warm to pioneers and people who risk it all to follow their dream. Daniel Yergin’s 1992 Pulitzer winning book - The Prize - told the story of the petroleum industry from 1850 to 1990 and became so acclaimed that it was translated into 14 languages. In the 900-page classic there was enough insight to satisfy the scholar. But it was his narratives on the colourful personalities in the history of oil that captured the interest of the public. The further back in time, the more these protagonists played to the lore of early prospectors. The early days of oil were a treasure trove for storytellers. Film makers such as Paul Anderson with There will be Blood and now Martin Scorsese with the highly anticipated Killers of the Flower Moon homed in on the nascent US oil production...
