About the Item

Something's Gotta Give Dinokeng, South Africa - 2025 Standard Edition of 12 + 3 AP Unframed: 40" x 37" Framed: 55" x 52" Large Edition of 12 + 3 AP Unframed 60" x 56" Framed 75" x 71" David's Narrative: This is Thor - the lion that I am most wary of in the world. He is a rare white lion who lives under the loving care of Kevin Richardson (The Lion Whisperer) in his sanctuary in South Africa. I have known Thor for 10 years, but neither his age nor familiarity have led to a mellowing of his behaviour; he would kill me in 10 seconds given half a chance. I am always in a cage when filming Thor and more recently a cage within a further cage. We made this extra defence as last year he tried to dig under the cage to get to me. It’s not a comfortable experience. There is a calm countenance to this preconceived portrait that is at odds with his basic instincts and the reality of the situation. It does not take top percentile visual sensibility to recognise the splendour of white lions and my goal on this set was to celebrate every detail of his face. In this kind of light, there is every chance, provided Kevin, with his unique ability, can facilitate the engagement. I loved the film Something’s Gotta Give and it’s not a bad title for this portrait. I often think of that beach house in the Hamptons and its emblematic cocktail of whites and creams. I think Thor would have fitted into those interiors seamlessly from a visual perspective but may have impacted the calm serenity of that rarified stretch of Long Island.

Born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1966, he is an internationally acclaimed fine art photographer and Europe’s best selling wildlife photographer. "This is one of the most unusual contextual images I have taken in East Africa in the last few years. The white of the flowering meadows and the white of the summit of Kilimanjaro combine to give the image an ethereal glow. The extreme weather conditions - it had rained torrentially for four or five days - had resulted in an implausible theatre of dreams. There was more snow on Kilimanjaro than I have ever seen before and the normal arid dustbowl of Amboseli was a garden bursting into acres of white carpet. For anyone that knows this area, the combination of whites provokes a degree of visual disquietude. It was quite a remarkable sight that was all down to the freak weather. The biblical rainfall had discouraged almost any other visitors and we had the amphitheatre to ourselves. We also had a film permit which allowed us to go off road - albeit the ground was very saturated and we were getting stuck regularly - we needed two vehicles to be safe. The bigger problem was that there were very few elephants in the park - the rain had pushed them out of the park and into the forests below Kilimanjaro. I knew, however, that in the vicinity of the KWS Rangers’ HQ, there are always a good number of big elephants hanging around as they feel safe. It was here that we spent much of our time this March - despite it being a 90 minute drive from our base. As soon as I saw the white meadows, I knew we had the chance of an image that offered a story of both lyrical grace and beauty - especially if the cloud lifted and we were exposed for a few brief minutes to the summit of Africa’s tallest mountain. Then we just needed the elephants and this was the X factor. No elephant - no party. About 5 pm on one unforgettable evening, everything came together as a small group of elephants headed to the foothills for the night and in so doing walked right through the white meadows. Getting in the right place for the composition was a fairly intense 10 minutes - I knew that this was a moment in time and I would not forgive myself if we missed it. I look at this picture a great deal and wonder whether it would be better if the elephants had been coming away from Kilimanjaro rather than moving towards it? We will never know, but the formation of the herd has a nice diagonal shape and it tells a story of a journey unaffected by my presence. I think the anonymity of the individual elephants helps focus on the wider context - which is really a hallmark of some sort of fantasy. Was this what The Garden of Eden...

Born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1966, he is an internationally acclaimed fine art photographer and Europe’s best selling wildlife photographer. "Of course, we have worked in this room many times before and I know my light, my angles and the minimal depth of focus. We called last year’s photograph of the mountain men at the bar “The Usual Suspects” as that is exactly what they were. Some of those men rarely leave the warmth of The Pioneer Bar in Virginia City throughout winter - in fact they hibernate there. It proved such a popular image and has sold out across the world - in some cases raising huge sums for charity. So, when we went back this year, we thought it would be fun to have an additional crew member - Cindy Crawford. The word juxtaposition is over used in narrative, but I think we can get away with it here. The old boys may drink a bit and smoke a bit of weed, but they were on their very best behaviour that day - which is essentially still medieval. An international icon joining their party was not something they bargained for and at least one cowboy convinced himself it was the weed. We had to call the image “The Unusual Suspects...
