Eadweard Muybridge
Inventor, photographer, entrepreneur, and artist - Eadweard Muybridge was responsible for creating some of the most important and groundbreaking photographic studies of motion. Often referred to as “the father of the motion picture” for his innovative use of the camera, Muybridge stands out - both for his groundbreaking artistic expression, and for his detailed scientific study of movement. Muybridge is best known for expanding and experimenting with the camera’s ability to capture and freeze motion, as he developed a set of multiple cameras with synchronized shutters. Born in Kingston-upon-Thames, England, in 1830, Muybridge immigrated to the United States at age 25 and settled in San Francisco. He quickly became one of the leading landscape photographers of the west. In 1872, former California governor and railroad entrepreneur Leland Stanford commissioned him to photograph his horse Occident trotting at full speed, to determine whether all four of a horse's hooves left the ground at the same time. The resulting photographs were the first successful examples of stop-action photography that the world had ever seen. In the summer of 1883, the University of Pennsylvania sponsored Muybridge to undertake the largest investigation yet of stop-action photographs, including women, men, children, horses, and a large variety of animals at the Philadelphia Zoo. Over the next three years, over 20,000 individual photographs were taken, resulting in the publication in 1887 of Human and Animal Locomotion, featuring 781 different collotype plates. Only 37 complete sets were produced, and additional plates were sold individually and by subscription. With this work, Muybridge became a significant precursor to 20th Century art, including painting, photography, and motion pictures. Artists as diverse as Sol Lewitt, Edgar Degas, Francis Bacon, and Phillip Glass were all influenced by his work. Major holdings of Muybridge collotypes are in the collections of prominent museums and libraries around the world. In the United States, these include the Library of Congress, Yale University, the Philadelphia Free Public Library, the University of Pennsylvania, Stanford University, and in New York – the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum, and the New York Public Library. In Europe, major Muybridge collections can be found at the British Library, the Cinémathèque Française, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Musées de Strasbourg, and the Kingston Museum in Muybridge’s home town.

Man Walking Past Parking Lot, 1989 - Black and White Photographic Print
By Michael Ormerod
Located in Brighton, GB
Man Walking Past Parking Lot is a Black and White Photographic Print on Hahnemuhle Paper in an Edition of 10 in this size of 24" x 34".
States of America is the photographic legacy of one of the UK’s leading photographic talents whose untimely death in 1991 ended prematurely the highly promising career of a distinctive and powerful photographic voice.
Michael Ormerod was born in Cheshire in 1947. He lived in Newcastle, but spent many years travelling America. Fascinated by the American image, and following in the footsteps of Robert Frank, Ormerod took to the American West to find a washed out dream of capitalism. His images capture a strange juxtaposition of an American beauty tainted by a hidden sense of menace and corruption.
The photographs are understated, but show an unseen America, where the industrial heartland is decaying, highways stand empty and towns are deserted. The subjects of Ormerod’s work are the disenfranchised. A teenager cycles through her neighbourhood wearing a Halloween-style hockey mask, a Native American man stands in a graveyard, their expressions are unreadable.
The work subverts traditional American icons. A white picket fence is staved in, a huge billboard for Miss Teen Dakota USA stands next to an empty highway. Inverting the famous Hollywood sign, Ormerod photographs a Texaco sign...

Arrival or Departure Photographic Series (After Hitchcock)
By Betty Hahn
Located in Soquel, CA
A series of five photographs by Betty Hahn titled, "Arrival or Departure (After Hitchcock), 1987, a series of five gelatin silver photographs" 17" by 24 each". A copy of the book included "Betty Hahn by Steve Yates. Gelatin silver photographic prints on paper mounted on foam board. Each has a sticker "BHC" with the letter indicating the print sequence "A-E". Following excerpt from the book "Betty Hahn "Photography Or Maybe Not" by Steve Yates, from the essay by Dana Asbury: "Instead of crime fiction and forensic photograph, the first filmic sequences have a moody raking light of film noir in the forties, and she titles Arrival or Departure (After Hitchcock) (plate 117). This series of 5 photographs (1987) shows the back of a man, unidentified, at a deserted train station, in late afternoon light. The rest is ambiguous. Is he coming or going? Is he moving away from him? Is there significance to the first close-up shot of a black duffel bag stuffed under his arm? It was of course Hitchcock's particular genius to explore the ominousness of everyday situations, and to show us that looking to long at anything makes it look suspicious. This series pays homage to Hitchcock's use of the tracking shot that conveys his terrifying message behind "Teddy Bear", that there is serious threat in ordinary objects. This series also fits in with the mood of "Appearance, Ehrlichman Surveillance", and many of the crime series-solitary male figure in an urban setting. There is a tough edge to these works."
Unsigned, gallery receipt of purchase copy included with notation on verso . 5 framed images. Each image, 16.5"H x 23.5"L.
The following biography is by Fumiko Koizumi at: The Visual Studies Workshop in association with the State University of New York at Brockport
Betty Hahn was born Elizabeth Jean Okon on October 11, 1940 in Chicago, Illinois. In 1967, Betty Hahn moved to Rochester to pursue a job at Kodak or Xerox. While in Rochester, she participated in Nathan Lyons's Visual Studies Workshop from 1967 to 1968. Lyons lectured on "vernacular" and "snap shot" photography to workshop students, reinforcing Betty's interest in this "folk" tradition. During her time at the VSW she met Tom Barrow, Roger Mertin, and Alice Wells, and reconnected with Robert Fichter. She was encouraged by how their work was challenging the rules of what was common in fine-print photography.
At age 10, her aunt Marcella Brown gave Betty her first camera, a Brownie #2. At this same time the Okon family moved to Indianapolis, Indiana. After graduating from Scecina Memorial Catholic High School in Indianapolis, she entered Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. She earned a four-year scholarship and studied fine arts. While she was experimenting with photographic image making her initial artistic experiences involved painting and drawing. She did not take photography seriously as a medium for her artistic expression during her undergraduate work.
At age 23, Hahn graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree and continued at Indiana University for graduate studies in the department of photography. At the suggestion of Henry Holmes Smith...
