Before digital when cameras used only film, a roll of 36 would be processed to produce a strip of negatives. The long roll of negatives was then cut into strips of six, usually with five or six frames on each strip. These strips were then laid carefully onto a sheet of photographic paper in the darkroom and exposed to light. The paper would be developed, fixed and dried to produce a set of 'positive' images on a sheet of photographic paper, known as a 'contact sheet' for photographers and picture editors to then select the best frames. Negatives were then stored in wallets with transparent sleeves of tissue with a cover made of paper where the photographer would write details to identify the work. These fitted neatly into filing cabinets for safe and easy storage.
Sent to Pinewood Studios on 22nd March 1962 to capture the historic moment when Sean Connery met author Ian Fleming on the set of Dr.No, the first of the hugely successful James Bond films. Herrmann was allowed to stay and record action sequences for the final scene of the film. Ian Fleming had worked as a foreign correspondent for The Sunday Times and tipped off the paper about his on set visit to Pinewood and subsequently made sure that they got the exclusive on this historic meeting.
All prints are embossed with the photographers stamp, numbered and signed by the photographer Frank Herrmann in pencil on lower right margin.

Frank Herrmann is widely regarded as one of the outstanding photo-journalists of the latter part of the 20th Century joining the Sunday Times in 1962 on a retained freelance basis before becoming a full member of staff in 1980. His illustrious career contained many highlights including the Paris riots of ’68, The Beatles at Abbey Road studios in ’67, The War of independence in Rhodesia in ’66, The Yom Kippur War in ’73, The Presidential Elections of ‘75 (Jimmy Carter) on set photos of the first Bond film, Dr No, in ’62, on set photos of the first episode of The Saint with Roger Moore in ‘62, The Playboy Club in London in ’65, Jean Shrimpton at home with David Bailey in ’63 as well as numerous sporting occasions such as the Wimbledon Final of ‘80 ( Borg vs McEnroe) and countless F.A. Cup Finals including Spurs vs Man City in ’81. The many famous faces in his portfolio include Francis Bacon, William Burroughs, Arthur Miller, Maggie Smith, Tony Curtis, Winston Churchill, Harold Macmillan, Jackie Kennedy, Henry Moore, Orson Welles, John Lennon, Duke Ellington, Bob Geldof, Sean Connery, Luciano Pavarotti, Princess Diana, Margaret Thatcher and H.M. The Queen.
His many books include the Glory Game, Great Britain - A Celebration. With Geldof in Africa and Portrait Photography and as a contributing photographer to Summer of Love - the Making of Sgt Pepper.
In 2021 he released his first limited edition series of archival pigment ‘imprimed’ prints under the banner Icons of the 1960’s, which included unseen pictures of Sean Connery on set of Dr.No, Roger Moore filming the first episode The Saint in ’62, along with new colorised versions of his Beatles photos from the Genesis publication Summer of Love - the Making of Sgt Pepper. Also included are rare and unseen original contact sheets of his work on set of Dr.No, The Saint, Jean Shrimpton at home and The Beatles at Abbey Road studios in ’67. Each edition is limited, signed, stamped and numbered by Herrmann himself.

Saul Leiter (1923-2013) was born in Pittsburgh to a father who was a well-respected Talmudic scholar. His passion for the arts ignited during his late teenage years, and despite being urged to follow in his father's footsteps to become a Rabbi, he chose to forgo theological studies, moving to New York at the age of 23 to delve into painting. In the city, he formed a friendship with Abstract Expressionist painter Richard Pousette-Dart, who was exploring photography. This connection, along with a subsequent friendship with W. Eugene Smith, deepened his fascination with photography. Leiter's initial black and white images reveal a remarkable talent for the art form. By the 1950s, he also began to explore color, producing a substantial and noteworthy collection during the early stages of this medium. His uniquely muted color palette often imparts a painterly essence that distinguishes his work from that of others in his era.
Leiter's inaugural showcase of color photography took place in the 1950s at the Artist's Club, a gathering spot for many Abstract Expressionists of that period. Edward Steichen included twenty-three of his black and white works in the influential 1953 exhibition "Always the Young Stranger" at the Museum of Modern Art and also showcased twenty of Leiter's color photographs during the 1957 MoMA event "Experimental Photography in Color.
