About the Item
The old country girl from the Escambray mountains. I was hiking in the mountains, close to Trinidad, when I met the family. They invited me in and we chatted about our different lives. Theirs was one of constancy and graft on the land, mine of journeys and displacement.
The Spirit of the Revolution series documents the generation of Cubans that saw the dramatic changes of 1959 as young adults. They have a strength of character and underlying humour that transcends the struggle that has defined their lives.
James Sparshatt went to Cuba in 1999 and was so taken with the island and its people that he returned 15 times in the following 7 years. His images are largely of the music and dance and innate rhythm of the island but he also found himself drawn to an older generation that had been old enough to understand the revolution in 1959, that lived through 40 years of tumultuous and often difficult times and who now watch with some bemusement the return of the outside world in wave upon wave of tourists.
James Sparshatt’s photographs of the “Revolutionary” generation of Cubans capture their grit and indominatable spirit.
The work is printed directly on to a sheet of brushed aluminium. The metal gives the work a gritty strength, a resilience that reflects the strength of the photographic subjects. The piece is light and has a high level of innate UV and humidity protection such that it is hangable in bright and damp environments.
The portraits are also available as more traditional silver gelatin prints on paper or as high end delectable palladium platinum prints.

James Sparshatt
James Sparshatt began his photographic career in the 1990s in Bolivia, working as a photojournalist and editor of the Bolivian Times. James has had solo exhibitions in the US, Ireland, Spain, Cuba, France and across the UK. His work has also been shown at prestigious contemporary art fairs including Pulse - Miami, Art Chicago, Art Hamptons, Slick Paris, Art Market (San Francisco) among others. James’s photographs have been used for many advertising campaigns and have featured in magazines such as Dazed and Confused, Tatler, Red, Wanderlust as well as all of the UK’s major broadsheets. He has also written for the New Statesman. “My love of photography developed while I was working as a photojournalist in Latin America in the 1990s. Both there, and later in Cuba, I was captivated by the energy and exuberance of the festivals and dance so inherent in Latino life. Many of my images celebrate the rich and vibrant musical heritage of Havana, Buenos Aires and Seville. When I look at them I recall the rhythmic beat of the music and almost feel a trickle of sweat running down my back.” His exhibition at the Royal National Theatre, London was described in the Sunday Telegraph as “a dazzling collection of black and white images”. James has been a finalist in the Sony World Photographic awards, the Centre for Fine Art Photography and The Worldwide Photography Gala awards. He has also won the Center for Fine Art Photography’s International award. James frequently gives talks about his work at photographic festivals and exhibitions.
