David McDermott was born in 1952 in Hollywood, California. He studied at Syracuse University, New York from 1970 to 1974. Peter McGough was born in 1958 in Syracuse, and studied at the same university in 1976. Their paths never crossed until they both moved to New York City some years later and started their artistic collaboration in 1980. Their photography involves appropriating images and objects from the late 19th century to the mid 20th century, as well as projecting an image of themselves as gentlemen, posing as erudite, impertinent characters. During the 1980s, McDermott & McGough dressed, lived, and worked as artists and “men about town,” circa 1900-1928: they wore top hats and detachable collars, and converted a townhouse on Avenue C in New York City’s East Village, which was lit only by candlelight, to its authentic mid-19th century ideal. “We were experimenting in time,” says McDermott, “trying to build an environment and a fantasy we could live and work in.”
Like their lifestyle, their photographs and paintings betoken a flat refusal to embrace the historical present. This obsession with the past is reflected in the subjects and styles they bring back to life, and in the precise fictional dates they give to their works. The personal dimension of their work makes it into a deliberately provocative and controversial contemporary artistic performance dealing with political and sociological issues.
McDermott & McGough’s work has appeared in solo and group exhibitions at such institutions as Frankfurter Kunstverein; The Whitney Museum of American Art, New York City; The New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York City; Centre Pompidou, Paris; Kunsthalle Wien, Vienna; the Irish Museum of Modern Art, and others.

McDermott & McGough
Known for their work in painting, photography, sculpture, and film, McDermott & McGough comprises visual artists David McDermott and Peter McGough, who formed their partnership on the East Village Art scene of the 1980s. The duo began their careers posing as turn-of-the-century New York dandies, turning their life into an exploration of notions of time and history while producing films and photographs that explored similar themes. Refusing to embrace the present, McDermott & McGough use old-fashioned materials and techniques—particularly old photographic processes with platinum and cyanotype—to explore popular culture, religion, medicine, advertising, fashion, and sex. In recent series they have restaged canonical works of 20th-century photography, produced photorealistic paintings of old-time movie stars, and recreated canonical works of Pop art. …

Born in Poland in 1942 as Armin Hagen Freiherr von Hoyningen-Huene, Peter Berlin is a relative of the celebrated fashion photographer George Hoyningen-Huene (1900-1968). Raised in Germany, Peter Berlin received post-secondary education as a photo-technician, and in his early 20s worked as a celebrity portraitist for German television. However, it was around this time that he curiously began designing and sewing his own skin-tight clothing which he would wear as he cruised the parks and train stations in Berlin, Rome, Paris, New York, and San Francisco. After several long-term stays on the east coast of the United States, Peter Berlin eventually moved to San Francisco in 1969, and became a fixture on the steep streets with his signature look and perpetual posing. He soon began producing films and starred in the now iconic “Nights in Black Leather” (1973), co-directed by Richard Abel. Berlin then produced, directed, and starred in “That Boy” the following year, and made four shorter films through the mid- to late-1970s, while publishing and selling his photographic self portraits. Peter Berlin was the subject of several Robert Mapplethorpe...
