About the Item

Split toned and hand-tinted gelatin silver print, printed by artist, with 8-ply over-mat and mounted to archival, 8-ply museum board Signed and numbered, recto 26 x 32 inches, overall mat size 22 x 28 inches, paper size (Edition of 20) This artwork is offered by ClampArt, located in New York City. Please note that prices increase as editions sell. In 2008, Michael Massaia started to document the amusement piers that skirt the New Jersey coastline during their most vacant moments (usually between the hours of 4:00 and 6:00 a.m.). These images were predominantly shot on the Funtown and Casino Piers in Seaside Park and Seaside Heights, New Jersey. In 2012, Hurricane Sandy completely destroyed both piers, forever altering the landscape. These images chronicle the final days of these piers, as well as what remains of the piers and their surroundings in the years following their devastation. Michael Massaia is a fine art photographer and printmaker who has spent the past ten years documenting areas and objects that never extend too far from his front door. Isolation, disconnection, and an attempt to put a spotlight on the ordinary are the constants in all of his work. He focuses primarily on large format black-and-white film, utilizing a variety of highly modified proprietary analog and digital printing techniques. Massaia works alone and is the sole craftsman from the instant the negative is exposed to the moment the final print is made.

Funtown Pier, Seaside Park
By Michael Massaia
Located in Westwood, NJ
This stunning 20"x 24" toned silver gelatin contact print is one of two final, late 2012 images that complete the Michael Massaia portfolio taken along the New Jersey Shore and presciently called "Afterlife". Beginning in 2008, the artist meticulously documented the amusement park rides along the gritty boardwalks of Seaside Heights seen by millions, but ultimately not really seen. Employing large format view cameras and film, Michael photographed in the early morning hours to depict these normally bustling areas completely devoid of humanity. As a native post Hurricane Sandy, he was able to revisit the amusement piers laid to waste by the storm to witness the devastation of all that he had previously photographed. The Funtown Pier was taken in November 2012 and is the last of two post storm photographs...
