Wenda Parkinson wearing knee-buttoned jeans and loose shirt by Spectator Sports. An alternative frame was originally part of a 16- page feature on holiday clothes, photographed in Oudtshoorn, South Africa. British Vogue, May 1951.
Norman Parkinson, born in 1913 and passing in 1990, was an icon in the realm of twentieth-century fashion photography, renowned for his transformative approach to portraiture and style. Not only did he revolutionize the field with his storytelling in images, but he was instrumental in ushering in the age of the supermodel, encapsulating casual elegance with a dash of distinct charm. His work exceeded the bounds of fashion, with the magnetism of his lens drawing in celebrities, artists, Presidents, and Prime Ministers.
Parkinson's subjects were a reflection of his influence, spanning from notable individuals in film, theatre, music to the British Royal Family. From the poised Audrey Hepburn, the iconic Beatles, the ebullient Twiggy, and the versatile David Bowie, Parkinson's photographic narrative captured the essence of an era. Among these illustrious personalities was Jane Berlin, a subject of a remarkable photograph taken in 1969.
His candid style of photography offered a refreshing divergence from the stilted formality of his predecessors, providing a unique glimpse into the lives of his subjects. Parkinson's enduring legacy lies in his innate ability to blend art with fashion, encapsulating the very spirit of the times, with the click of his camera.
Echoes of Parkinson's visionary spirit can be found in the works of contemporary photographers such as Annie Leibovitz, Mario Testino, and Peter Lindbergh. These artists, while unique in their expression, have drawn inspiration from Parkinson's innovation, extending his indelible influence into the present day. His expansive oeuvre, marked by authenticity and artistic flair, remains a testament to his visionary spirit.
IFAC Arts is honored to be able to work with the Norman Parkinson estate and represent his entire collection.

Norman Parkinson
Norman Parkinson (1913-1990) was the Twentieth Century’s most celebrated fashion photographer. He pioneered epic storytelling in his images, taking portrait and fashion photography beyond the stiff formality of his predecessors and injecting an easy and casual elegance into the art. His photographs created the age of the supermodel and made him the photographer of choice for celebrities, artists, Presidents and Prime Ministers. Parkinson worked for a wide range of publications, notably Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Town & Country and other international magazines, which brought him worldwide recognition. He reinvented himself and fashion photography throughout his career, from his ground-breaking, spontaneous images of the 1930s, through the war years and the Swinging Sixties to the exotic locations of the 1970s and 1980s. By the end of his life he had become a household name, the recipient of a CBE, Honorary Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society, and the subject of a large scale retrospective at the National Portrait Gallery, London. Norman Parkinson died whist on location in Singapore shooting for Town & Country in 1990.
