Art Gallery at the Dorsey Mansion, Union County, New Mexico, 2014
The art gallery was the last room built at the Dorsey Mansion, specifically to house paintings collected by the ex-senator during his stay in Paris. He recollected for a reporter that while in Paris he met up with his friend “Charley” Dickens, who, harassed by creditors, was unable to write. Dorsey claimed to have assisted him by providing the “conception in general plot and detail” of what became “A Tale of Two Cities”—a flagrant lie, as Dorsey arrived in Paris in the spring of 1886 and Dickens’ novel was published in 1859. (The roof beams mimic the design of Dorsey’s triangle dot cattle brand.)
