About the Item

Driving Miss Daisy Nantucket, MA - 2022 Archival Pigment Print on 315gsm Hahnemühle Photo Rag Baryta Paper Edition Size: 12 Available sizes: Standard Image Size: 37" x 69" Framed Size: 52" x 84" Large Image Size: 55" x 102" Framed Size: 70" x 117" Artist Statement: Nantucket is known for its lighthouses; they are integral to the island’s story and it was always my plan to build a story around one of them. Equally, we don’t do postcard pictures and there is always a danger of falling into the trap of being bland - particularly on an island as well photographed as Nantucket. There is a curious tradition on Nantucket of welcoming the arrival of spring with Daffy Day - a celebration of the island’s unusually large population of daffodils that burst into life in April. Thousands of people come from the mainland on this chosen Saturday, although Covid put paid to the event in 2020 and 2021. The centre piece of the celebration is a vintage car rally and the famous cobbled main street of Nantucket turns into a sea of yellow. This prompted some ideas and I recognised the potential of borrowing a cool vehicle and building a story around it. We had a Morgan Freeman look-a-like on the island - Ron Sanford - and the idea of a Driving Miss Daisy concept then fell into place quite quickly. We had already scouted all the lighthouses and I knew my spot, not far from the Sankaty Head Light, built in 1850 at the easternmost point of the island. The lighthouse was always going to play a contextual role, not the lead role, that honour went to Kate Bock, who made for a spring like Miss Daisy. The shoot was over by 7.10 am in the morning. Just as well, as we were shooting on Sankaty Head Golf Club and I think the members may have found the visual overload too much for their golf that morning. - David Yarrow

Bodega Bay California - 2020 Archival Pigment Print on 315gsm Hahnemühle Photo Rag Baryta Paper Edition Size: 12 Available sizes: Standard Image Size: 37" x 42" Framed Size: 52" x 57" Large Image Size: 56" x 64" Framed Size: 71" x 79" Artist Statement: The second from my series that is a play on Hitchcock’s masterpiece - The Birds. The photograph places British models David Gandy and Bella di Lorenzo in a banged up 1961 Sunbeam Rapier with the Atlantic Ocean as the backdrop. I know the area well and the image was easy to preconceive, but damn hard to capture. The topography of the coast here in Devon is not dissimilar to the film location of Bodega Bay in northern California and I found a road location that would work well with the morning light. I wanted a big sky and a layered narrative, so I knew long before we shot that I would be working with a wide-angle lens from the car bonnet, with limited depth of field. I rather liked the fencing behind as well - so reminiscent of the opening scene in Jaws...

The Biggest Catch Nantucket, Massachusetts - 2022 Archival Pigment Print on 315gsm Hahnemühle Photo Rag Baryta Paper Edition Size: 12 Available sizes: Standard Image Size: 37" x 49" Framed Size: 52" x 64" Large Image Size: 56" x 73" Framed Size: 71" x 88" Artist Statement: In my deliberations as to how to tell a Nantucket story, there were some key associations of the island that I knew I needed to incorporate. One was always going to be its storied maritime past, and in particular its leading position in the whaling industry. Then there are certain features on the island that if included in an image would reinforce a sense of place - such as Nantucket Grey buildings and of course the lighthouses. But in our production meetings in the run up to the assignment, there was one feature I kept on requesting that we prioritised - the cobbled streets. When I think of Nantucket, I think of the cobbles - particularly on Main Street - not only because of their aesthetic appeal, but also because they tell a story of the island’s British roots.
