About the Item

Ghost Rider Grand Tetons, Wyoming - 2021 Archival Pigment Print on 315gsm Hahnemühle Photo Rag Baryta Paper Edition Size: 12 Available sizes: Standard Image Size: 37" x 65" Framed Size: 52" x 80" Large Image Size: 56" x 98" Framed Size: 71" x 113" Artist Statement: This was one of the coldest days in the field that I can remember. It was probably around 30 degrees below zero when the crew assembled on the lake below the Tetons just after dawn. Initially I was hoping for the low cloud to clear to unveil the grandeur of the mountain range behind, but it just lingered. After some very necessary shots of whisky, we decided to work with what we had and to use the rather ethereal light to our advantage. Stories from the Wild West should not always be played against towering monoliths marooned in scorching deserts; the final frontier could also be cold and disorientating. Hautpaw - my Native American talent - was an excellent and stoic muse. We really could not ask him to spend more than five minutes at a time on his horse as he was so exposed to the cold. He makes the photograph. That’s the challenge of employing negative space; the image is vulnerable if the subject is anything less than perfect. He painted himself and was dead proud of the end result. If I were a settler in the Northern Rockies in 1880 and Hautpaw emerged through the freezing fog in this manner, I think I would need more than a whisky. - David Yarrow

Blackfeet Nation
By David Yarrow
Located in Chicago, IL
Blackfeet Nation Glacier National Park, Montana - 2023 Archival Pigment Print on 315gsm Hahnemühle Photo Rag Baryta Paper Each is signed, dated and numbered on the front. Edition Size: 12 Available sizes: 37 x 54 inches 56 x 81 inches "In the 17th century, the Blackfeet settled in the region that is now Montana. Previously, they resided in the woodlands north and west of the Great Lakes, but pressure from British traders pushed them west. They eventually acquired firearms and horses and became a formidable example of the classic Plains Indian culture. Ravaged by smallpox and constantly struggling with the challenges of extreme winters, low bison numbers and relative isolation, the Blackfeet had great fortitude and are often now referred to as the “Real People” of Montana. The Blackfeet’s tribal headquarters are in the town of Browning in the extreme North West corner of the state. The celebrated Glacier National Park may sit to the west and with it comes smart resorts like Whitefish, but Browning has little refinement - it is a grim and remote frontier town that is avoided by most travellers. It’s all a bit sketchy up there - especially in the winter. However, within 20 minutes of Browning, the Blackfeet enjoy some of the most majestic scenery in America, and it was this that drew me to the location. It was always going to be a winter shoot, as the snow added in another character for free. So in January 2023, we made the road trip north from Bozeman - it’s a long way, and the sense of adventure intensifies towards the Canadian border. This is a remote and isolated corner of America, and relative to other reservations in the US, I sense that filmmakers have had a light footprint around Browning. The tribal elder, Dutch Lunak and his horse Rain Man...

"Chief" American Indian Photographed in Wyoming Devil's Tower
By David Yarrow
Located in Greenwich, CT
"Chief" Wyoming, USA 2020 Large: 71" x 96” Edition of 12 Standard: 52" x 69" Edition of 12 This work is sourced directly from the artist. Framed Digital Pigment Print on Archival 315gsm Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Baryta Paper Hand-signed by artist with Certificate of Authenticity Over the last few weeks we have quietly been photographing senior Native Americans against the backdrop of quintessential and emblematic American vistas.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Whilst we will be releasing some of the series in the run up to the Presidential Election, this is not an overtly political statement from us. We know that Native Americans have long had a leaning toward the Democratic Party, but we took this assignment on because it is relevant, not to be political.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ There is wide recognition now that Christopher Columbus did not discover America in 1492 and the events in Minneapolis have accelerated the debate on the possibility of institutionalised racism in the teaching of American history. This is not a discussion we want to fully engage in - as we are ill equipped to add value, but I do want to celebrate some of the tribal elders I have had the fortune to encounter in the last month. Their pride, manners, grace and humility have been humbling. We have made new friends in the North.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ For this project we worked with Chief John Spotted Tail, the great-great-grandson of the fabled Lakota chief Spotted Tail. We spent two days with him in Northern Wyoming and he was so excited to wear the headpiece that only the most senior Native American chiefs like him can wear. His attire was emphatically his decision not ours. Their heritage is integral to their souls.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ The ground in front of Devils Tower...
