About the Item

LIEKO SHIGA (*1980, Japan) Funeral 2009 C-type print, Face mounted to acrylic (Diasec) Image/Sheet 130 x 120 cm (51 1/8 x 47 1/4 in.) Edition of 3; Ed. no. 1/3 Based on an instinctive feeling of unease with the convenience and automation of daily life, Japanese photographer Lieko Shiga has developed an artistic approach that links questions about the nature of the photographic medium with fundamental questions about life and the means of expressing oneself. Shiga received the coveted Kimura Ihei Photography Award in 2008. Her works were recently shown in the group exhibition “In the Wake. Japanese Photographers Respond to 3/11” at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Shiga made the New Photography 2015 short list of the Museum of Modern Art. – Photography, Stillife, Memento Mori, Flowers, Drawing, Vase, Contemporary

Flower Rondeau #091 – Nobuyoshi Araki, Japanese Photography, Flowers, Nature
By Nobuyoshi Araki
Located in Zurich, CH
Nobuyoshi ARAKI (*1940, Japan) Flower Rondeau #091, 1997 RP Direct print 76.2 x 101.6 cm (30 x 40 in.) Print only Nobuyoshi Araki (Tokyo, 1940) is a Tokyo-based photographer. Araki completed his studies at Chiba University’s Department of Photography, Painting and Engineering with a focus on the study of film and photography. His photographic project Satchin earned him the prestigious Taiyo Award in 1964, shortly after he had joined the advertising agency Dentsu, where he worked until 1972. At Dentsu he met his wife Yoko, to whom he paid homage in Sentimental Journey, a photographic record of their honeymoon published in 1971. Eros and thanatos (sex and death) has been a central theme in Araki’s work; an abiding fascination with female genitalia and women’s bodies in Japanese bondage, flowers, food, his cat, faces and Tokyo street...

Edition of 6 (#1/6) Reminiscent of Japanese photography of the 1960s Rinko Kawauchi’s work is the search for the sublime amid the banal. Her series ‘HANABI’ (Japanese term for ‘firework’) depicts the photographer's vision of a fireworks show. The breezes of summer nights, the footsteps of children running alongside a riverbank, clouds portending warm showers and the sweet smell of apple candy are at powerfully nostalgic, at once both beautiful and melancholy. We are drawn in by a dance of lights and colors, and in the blink of an eye, an elegant and sensory party draws to a close, leaving us wondering what Kawauchi saw in the fireworks, and what lies beyond them. Kawauchi, currently one of the most famed contemporary female Asian artists...
